Sorry, read it was 5 years old so should of been running 2000 or millenium, as you bought it new with XP installed all you can do is increase the RAM.
The other you can try is to find out what programs are running in the background, this could well slow your pc down. to do this go start, run, type in msconfig and then go to last tab for start up, check to see whats running at start up, a lot of it is not needed to run all the time - Hope this helps

Already given that a go and it made things a bit better, but still awfully slow.

Have asked one of the ebay sellers to confirm re compatibility, and if so I will be buying 512mb ram from them.

So thanks for all the advice, most helpful. :D

Where do I find these sticks on the laptop? Are they accessible or inside the machine? Sorry for all the questions.

Ram sticks in a laptop are usually accesible through a trapdoor on the back of the laptop.(laptops ram is smaller than normal pc ram)

Laptop memory is usually pc100 but not always, as an example of price a 128mb stick of pc100 laptop memory is approx £25.00 upwards. You may be able to sell the 64mb stick to finance the cost.

Bummer, the seller has come back and said not compatible.

Anyone know of anyone who sells memory cheaper than crucial??

Also, what am I looking for in terms of specification for memory to be compatible?

    168 pin DIMM
    SDRAM
    133
    CL=2
    non-parity
    3.3V

Are all these specific to the memory I need, ie if I search on ebay as previously suggested for 168 pin DIMM SDRAM 512 PC133, what else do I have to check matches up to be sure it will work?

Thanks CIS - just one more question - is it a case of just swapping them over or does taking away a memory stick remove things from the laptop? Cheers, Jen

Changing RAM wont lose you any information at all.No information is stored on the RAM, its only used as a temporary storage whilst the power is switched on . Any permanent information is written to the hard drive.

You'll find this hard to beat on price. They have a good returns policy and as you can see from the web page you can ask compatibility questions before you order.

Anyone know why the crucial memory finder only comes up with 256mb memory stick when it says my pc will take up to 512mb. I already have 128mb, but was going to remove that and replace with a 512mb memory stick.

Just wondering..... Have you not got two slots?..... i.e. 256MB in each slot. :)

The maximum capacity the motherboard can take is 512mb, each of the 2 slots can take a maximum of 256mb each, filling each slot gives 512mb.
