Quick search on National Rail website

I make it £47.60 for all four of you on the 1120 there and 1925 back with a Friends & Family Railcard.

Thank you! I can't believe the discrepancy in prices. I have just purchased a family railcard for £23 so this will make a huge difference. Thanks again. :)
Jan-March: reduced monthly food bill by £400 (cancelled overdraft and started saving)
    April: £112.17/£180 food budget. £9.39/£20 household. 4/15 NSD's.

    Still planning your Leicester trip?
According to the Booking Horizons web page, Cross Country trains have released tickets for w/e 4Oct.
Unfortunately engineering works will affect your journey beyond Birmingham.
Probably best for you to get an advance single from Exeter StD to Birmingham New St, for around £26 at the moment, and get a OffPeak Return from Birmingham NS to Leicester for £14.
Advance Single from Birmingham NS to Exeter StD is available for £16.50 dep BNS at 10:46
    So return trip for £56.50.

  • Hi all,

Someone told me that there is a website which lists all late trains, which would be really useful. I am a regular commuter and want to reclaim for the delays I encountered whist travelling everyday, but I never write down the delayed times and end up forgetting which day it happened on. Anyone heard of this website and can point me in the right direction?

    Many thanks

You could try splitting at any of the called at stations...
Derby, Sheffield, Doncaster, York, Darlington, Durham.
(this may be an incomplete list).

Please note that splitting doesn't always produce a cheaper fare.
Usually your best first option would/should be with Advance Tickets.

Have you read the Cheap Train Tickets article?

What fares have you already found?
  • sorry if this has been mentioned already, I'm new here - but if anyone has a 16-25 railcard it's worth mentioning that Transpennine Express will take 50% off your advance fare rather than the usual 33%, sometimes up to the day before (:
  • Hi guys I'm new to this website and its already opened my eyes :P. Anyway I'm planning on taking my girlfriend away for the weekend and have looked into the different ways of splitting my ticket, booking advance and return. However I was quoted from a conductor at a local train station £70 for 2 adult return tickets so that's a total of £140 from Preston - London. However I have asked around a few people and they have told me this is a bit pricey. So I've scoured the Internet to find tips and tricks and scoured for promotions and special offers. I tried getting from Manchester - London to see if that was much cheaper however I'm stuck with £132 for both return tickets. Although I would have to get from Preston - Manchester anyway, we don't have railcards, which has left me with a total cost of £140 as the best price. Now I know since i'm new at this (don't usually travel by train) then there is possibly a better ticket price or deal out there for me. I was curious to see if anybody else could help me find a better ticket price for me. That'ss 2 adults going to and from London from Preston (PR1). I apologise if this is the wrong place to ask, however any help would be appreciated as I am planning to go on the 21/08/09 and return on 23/08/09, Thanks in advance :)

    On the dates you mention...
Dep Preston 09:17 arr Euston 12:04. Change at Crewe. Advance Single £31.50.
Dep Euston 21:10 arr Preston 23:43. Advance Single £12.50.
So two people return for a total of £88.00.
Remember, with Advance tickets you must travel on the booked train.
