    I'll be visiting England from Canada in June. I've found a train ticket from London to Grantham via Waterbeach. Its about five pounds cheaper than buying a London to March ticket and only takes an extra 15minutes. I want to travel short and get off in March. Does anyone at the March station check tickets to see if they are valid and if so will i have to pay a penalty for getting off the train too early?

    I don't understand why it takes 15 minutes longer - it's the same train surely????

    Anyhow, I don't know if March station checks tickets. If they do you'll have to pay as if you had no ticket at all.

    Ok thanks dzug1 I purchased the ticket yesterday so I hope they arent checking.

    The extra 15 minutes is how much longer it takes to go from London to March by routing through Waterbeach and Cambridge. The more expensive ticket goes to Peterboro but is quicker.

    Try this;
    Glasgow Central to Birmingham New St 05:50 Advance single £14
    Birmingham New St to Peterbough Off Peak Return £29

    Peterbough to Birmingham New St Off Peak Return £0

    Birmingham New St to Glasgow Central 17:20 Advance single £14

    Total £57

    on the way back just give yourself plenty of time to catch the train from Birmingham to Glasgow

    **Edit** you can also split at Crewe and save yourself another £12ish but this seems like a bit of an Epic journey from Crewe to Peterbourgh

    Got it from http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ but any train companies search engine/website will do.

    Make sure you search 'Glasgow Central to Birmingham New St' and then 'Birmingham New St to Peterborough' as it's a split journey and you will get two seperate rail tickets atleast.

    You can buy these at the ticket office on the day at the same price - not much point in buying in advance.
