Are you sure that it wasn't just being keep warm in the oven after it had been made on the hob?
Obviously, as it stood in the oven the flavour would develop.
Sorry can't be more helpful than that.0 -
I would have thought its just a case of mixing the oats and milk/water and cooking it on low in the oven for 30-40 mins or so, I can't imagine it would taste different though just use more gas/electric!!"You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

I wonder if doing it overnight in the slow cooker would give the same effect/taste?Old-Style Enthusiast :j0

I only ever use the Scotts whole grain oats which I cook in the microwave with semi skimmed milk. We usually have lots of dried fruit such as apricots or sultanas in the cupboard or home grown soft fruit in the freezer so I stir in some of that with a little brown sugar if it needs sweetening. It makes a cheap wholesome meal which stops that nagging hungry feeling around 10 a.m.0

I don't like breakfast too early so I throw everythink in a flask and have it at break in work, and it stops me buying sausage buttys!
I heat a cup of milk in the microwave, put it in a flask add the oats and sugar then top up with boiling water from the kettle. A couple of hours later it's fantastic!
WinkyRight now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before0 -
Hi all
Honest I have trawled through some past posts as I know there will be lots of this subject!
Have just been away at a work conference and the centre did yummy porridge for breakfast. Was starting to get a bit tired of w**tabix! It was a lovely consistency, really creamy!
So this morning I tried to recreate that at home- did not work quite as well. I used porridge oats and a mix of SSM and water in the microwave. I ate it but it was lumpy and a bit solid - maybe I just needed more liquid??
I appreciate that it's not going to be as creamy with a water/milk mix but need to watch the milk calories too. But I can't cope with 100% water!
Any ideas/solutions always gratefully received!

What quantities did you use? I normally use a cup or mug to measure both the milk and oats. Half a cup of oats to one cup of milk is about right for me at breakfast. Obviously it depends on the size of your cup/mug. I mix it up in a bowl and put it in the microwave giving it a stir every minute or so until I'm happy with the consistency.
Could you use semi-skimmed or skimmed milk? The calorie difference isn't great and the fat content is only slightly higher in semi skimmed. And fat isn't always a bad thing; we need it to live after all.
Edit - there are 115 calories in 250ml of semi skimmed milk. You won't need anywhere near that amount to make a bowl of porridge. Probably more like 100ml which is around 46 calories.0
