I have recently moved one step up from value oats as this makes a creamier, thicker porridge. Also it's smoother if you make it on the hob rather than in the microwave.

I use 50g oats and enough skimmed milk to get the consistency I want.

I use a cup of oats and 2 and half cups of liquid (I cup full fat milk rest water). I do it on the hob and dd stirs it all the time so its lovely and creamy. This amount makes enough for me, ds (12 and eats more than me) and dd (3 but eats nearly as much as me!)

1 mug of oats to 1 and a half of water .bung them in to a small saucepan and stir whilst its cooking takes about three minutes to thicken up. chuck into the cereal bowl add a dash of salt and some milk to chill arond the edge and perfect porridge I have made it like this for over 47 years and never had a lumpy porridge yet.

I put oats in a bowl, cover by 1" with boiling water, put a plate over and leave to stand for five minutes. Then mix, add some milk, microwave 40s, mix, add milk, microwave.

  • Just thought I'd feedback on today's method.....

half a cup of oats and a pinch of salt covered with half a cup of boiling water and covered for a few minutes, then add a splosh of milk and microcwaved for 30 secs. add chopped banana and a light sprinkle of demerara

Definitely less thick and lumpy - not quite creamy but much better

    thanks all :j

My Nan leaves her oats soaking in milk/water in the fridge over night and they're really creamy.

  • Half cup value oats, cup full cream milk, heaped teaspoon of sugar. Microwave for 2 mins, stir well, back in for 1 min.

Stir well, add tiny drop of cold milk to cool and if DDs are having it, I let them stir in a squeeze of golden syrup. ;)

I always keep a 'portion' of dry oats and sugar in my desk at work, I then just use my tiny 'work jug' to measure the milk if I didn't eat breakfast at home that day.

I couldn't eat it with either water or watery milk (I hear people call this 'skimmed' or 'semi-skimmed' - personally I would refer to it as 'stolen cream' or 'half my cream stolen' ;))
  • mmmmm.... after Christmas I stir in a teaspoon of brandy butter or cream as well (a good way to use any up!).

I have just found a recipe in my (women and home) dinner tonight magazine that tells you how to do porridge in the slow cooker so it's ready for the morning. Has anyone ever tried this? I am gonna test tonight, hopefully get whole family into it and I'll let you know the results

I can't quite get my head round all this measuring!

I slop some oats in a bowl till I think there's enough, stir in milk till I think it's the right consistency and then cook in microwave for about 2 mins till I think it's done!

I am fussy about the oats though, I prefer Jordan's organic oats because the flakes are large. I hate powdery porridge.
