    Hi 2009ismyyear,

    I always make porridge with full cream milk as I think that adds to the creaminess. To get it lump free, keep stirring it, even if you're making it in the microwave remove it and stir it every minute or so and if you think it needs a little more milk then add it as and when.

    You can just put the dry oats in a wide neck flask and just cover them with boiling water about an inch above the oats add a tablespoon of dried milk for extra creamyness then screw the lid on and wait a few minutes. Stir well then add milk and sugar. By the time you have your shower you will have a lovely hot breakfast waiting for you.
    I sometimes dont even bother with the flask i just do the above in a bowl and cover with a small plate. Try it and see if it is for you, can always go back to cooking them in the traditional way.

    I too make my porridge in the micro and have perfected mine now...... half a cup of oats to 1 and half cups of liquid (milk and or water, I use a bit of both) then micro for 4 minutes in a high sided jug for 4 minutes, stir when it's done only, transfer to bowl and scoff :) Works a treat. I got fed up of concrete or exploding and got this method off the side of the oats packet!! (what a revelation eh!!) lol

    Mine never comes out as good in the microwave....if i'm at home I put 40g oats with 100ml water 100ml whole milk in a sauscepan bring to the boil and stir until the consistency is how i'd like it.

    Personally I find a better quality oats gives a "creamier" porridge even when just made with water.

    For 1 portion,I use a level 80ml measuring cup, put it in a high-sided measuring jug and top up to 400ml (ish) with water (or milk etc) and microwave for "about" 3 mins, stirring once or twice during cooking. I serve with a splash of milk and tsp of sugar or bit of sweetner.

    I find this very handy when I've got insatiable munchies.....warm, filling, and satisfying. Sometimes I make it a bit thinner consistency to make a really big bowl full!

    I agree about not being too many calories in the milk, but I still enjoy the porridge with water, so that frees-up the "dairy calories" for something else later!

    Could you use semi-skimmed or skimmed milk? The calorie difference isn't great and the fat content is only slightly higher in semi skimmed. And fat isn't always a bad thing; we need it to live after all ;).

    Edit - there are 115 calories in 250ml of semi skimmed milk. You won't need anywhere near that amount to make a bowl of porridge. Probably more like 100ml which is around 46 calories.

    I used 4 tbsps of oats and then 4 each of water and milk. Looks like the ratio is about right - perhaps I just need to experiment more with these various methods!

    I tried weezl's porridge and surprisingly it is very creamy. My friend tried it in the microwave and again it tasted quite creamy.

    On the hob, one cup porridge oats, one cup full fat milk, one cup water. My son has his with honey and I have mine with hm wild cherry syrup (it was supposed to be jam shhh! ;)). I think stirring it helps to bring out the creaminess (that is based on the logic that stirring rice in a risotto releases the starch resulting in creaminess).
  • I use half semi skimmed milk and half soya milk, it tastes really creamy like that - try it you'll be surprised!

    Also make it in a pan and stir it lots
  • I make mine in a pan with about 6tbsp of oats and then milk to cover. I find if I leave it to soak for half an hour or so (while I get a shower and get myself and children dressed) it cooks quickly and is also creamier. Keep stirring so it doesn't stick and I sometimes have to add extra water or milk (depending on my mood) if it gets too thick. I usually aim to cook it for about 4-5 mins on the hob. When I put it into my bowl I pour a little cold milk on top - helps to cool it down and make it creamier again. I eat it plain - no sugar/honey etc but it is gorgeous when I put some stewed spicy plums on top!
