Didn't those two hippies largely lose that case? I recall McDonald's being awarded damages that they never bothered collecting. There were a few points that the court ruled were fine (such as that eating mainly McDonald's would increase the fat content of your diet, I don't think anyone was seriously contesting this, nor did people feel educated reading that on a leaflet.) The hippies did however win a case against the UK government over them being refused legal aid, but that's a completely seperate issue to the McLibel case.tomstickland wrote: »Delicious if you've eroded your senses through exposure.
How often have you eaten it with an open mind and no pre-judgements?Bought, not Brought0 -
The two hippies proved to be highly embarrasing to McDonalds, who had expert witnessed agree that the food was high in fat, salt and sugar. They represented themselves and tril went on for years and years, depsite McDonalds spending a huge amount of money.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MclibelMcDonald's spent several millions pounds, while Steel and Morris spent £30,000.In its libel allegation, McDonald's asserted that all claims in the pamphlet were false.I]citation needed[/I They found it difficult to support this positionIn June 1995, McDonald's offered to settle the case (which "was coming up to its first anniversary in court"[9]) by donating a large sum of money to a charity chosen by the two. They further specified that they would drop the case if Steel and Morris agreed to "stop criticising McDonald's".[9] Steel and Morris secretly recorded the meeting; McDonald's said the pair could criticise McDonald's privately to friends but must cease talking to the media or distributing leaflets. Steel and Morris wrote a letter in response saying they would agree to the terms if McDonald's ceased advertising its products and instead only recommended the restaurant privately to friends.Steel and Morris had proven the truth of three fifths of the claims in the original leaflet but were found guilty of libel on several pointsHappy chappy0 -

if you don't like it don't eat, but don't knock it!0 -
I'm sure several million pounds means a lot less to McDonald's than the £30,000 meant to Steel and Morris. Only one side ended up in financial difficulty as a result of the case (fortunately the later case against the UK government sorted them out) and for all their claims, how many people give two hoots? Very few people eat a burger from McDonald's thinking "Gee, this is extra healthy" The case might have been embarrasing but they're still raking it in.Bought, not Brought0

Amazing. Didn't those two people feel slightly stupid saying they've figured fried chips and burgers might not be the healthiest of foods to eat!Yup, I think they're shonky - that's another in the minority;)
Two of you. It amazes me that your post between the lines suggests that because there's now two of you that have said this that you now think that this somehow doesn't make you a minority.
Theres 60 million people in this country, untill I see 30 million posts in this thread agreeing with you, I'm sorry, but you're still a minority!0 -
Paying for food supplied at McDonalds has far greater global implications then most of you have contemplated, it seems. Outside of its friendly family image, designed to make you feel comfy and warm towards using this easy establishment, this company has appaling and unscrupulous environmental ethics. Disregarding the ill effects which their products have been proven to exert upon peoples health and wellbeing, the full extent of their whole system is a lot more sinister..
On the whole issue of 'minority / majority', which a couple of you seem to believe deduces the ultimate truths and end answers to a raised problem (such as, in the instances used in this thread: a.) the majority like to eat at McDonalds, so therefore the company and their products MUST be ok, and we SHOULD feel good about eating their products, &: b.) the minority who are against it ARE only the minority, so they must either be ignorant, crazy, or HIPPIES!), this scale of majority is actually completely flexible, and may swing completely the other way when you consider instead many of the other aspects which make up the operations of a company outside of this 'tasty food' / 'unhealthy junk' argument.
With increased public awareness of the hazards that anthropogenic-enhanced global warming will ever-increasingly exert upon both humanity and much of the wildlife/plants etc which we RELY UPON TO LIVE, I am sure that many of you will also be aware that our Worlds rainforests have an important part to play in: stabilising average global temperatures; helping to generate rainfall; preventing regions from turning into otherwise unworkable and arid deserts.
What McDonalds DON'T tell you on their happy colourful pamphlets and merry child-friendly toy-endorsed clown adverts is that McDONALDS ARE DESTROYING OUR RAINFORESTS, USING YOUR CUSTOM TO HELP!!
Tens of thousands of hectares of beautiful pristine Amazon Rainforest have been torn down by this company to be turned instead into monoculture GRASS fields. All of the millions of species of animals plants and insects which inhabited this forest (many of which haven't even been discovered or identified yet!) are displaced and left without the habitat which they require to survive. Some MAY be able to migrate in time to places of rainforest which aren't yet ravaged, but many many more will be killed off by this action. And for those that DO manage to make it away from the logging machines; their time is still to come, as McDonalds (along with many other big multinational companies) will keep chopping down more and more rainforests to convert into:
!!!CATTLE RANCHES!!!
What an unworthy substitute, just so that they can intensively farm even more animals in cruelly insufficient conditions in order to provide more of what allures the (as of yet) unknowing consumer: cheap meat!!
In my mind, it is a very irresponsible age of sadness.
I know people who frequent this eatery and places like it (such as the similarly practised Burgerking) go there for a variety of reasons, not the least because advertising is so strong and clever from the marketing company that it ensnares children as young as..?Well, as young as it takes to watch tv and find the idea of a happy clown and free toys of their favourite cartoon characters with their meal appealing! And 'treating' your children to what they would like, especially when it's so cheap and relatively effort free would be a pull to many people. Millions of pounds are spent to get you to want to like it, build up a rapport with the supposedly friendly and inoffensive company that you've 'known' for so long, to GET YOU TO STAY THERE / be defensive about the first person who challenges the idea that McDonalds may not be the best thing for you and your child. And indeed, the World.
But cheapness, an overload of tastes (and addictive chemicals laced in their foods), and also the convenience of a product should NOT be all that is consulted when deciding whether or not you personally wish to give money for a company's products.
I do not make the aim of this post to criticize any of you, but just ask that you consider some of these things when voting with your hard-earned moneys, and also, instead of firing up at each other for differences of opinion regarding this debate, to share actual relevant knowledge which may help the other.
ps, to the OP I sympathise with you. It does not shock me that such a company would conduct such behaviour towards a member of staff; employees, as with animals and landscapes, are affordable cheap and expendable in their scheme of work. Maybe ask your son to do a bit of research on google on this company outside of their propaganda; he'd probably feel a lot differently than wanting to work for such a machine.0 -
Theres a war going on, people dying in Africa because of simple things at water and hygeine, there are chinese kids being used as cheap workforce, north korea.., thousands die from second hand smoke.
The word isn't perfect. Get over it.0 -
The world isn't perfect, you're right; so then the least we can do is to try to protect it and not make it any worse!
Or maybe i'm missing something here?? No, wait, maybe YOU are :rolleyes:0 -
The fact is there are adverts everyday about poverty, the news tells stories about the wars, people protesting about whale hunting. Very rarely does anything suceed. The fact is, do what you like, if you are against McD's then fine, don't shop there thats your choice, but I highly doubt everyone is going to stop because of the rain forest eh lol0

No, you are. Every company will have some impact on the environment. You've just chosen to be obsessed with McDonalds.
If you're really that concerned, why did I read your post? You had to use a computer to do that which the manufacture of would have had some impact on the environment, you had to use electricity to do it.
Why is it most environmentalists have one rule for themselves and another rule for others.0
