I can vouch for the inflexibility of Mcdonalds, my daughter works for them and recently asked for a day off because she had an AS law exam (4 hr paper) that went on till 4.30 (she would normaly start at 5pm, but would'nt have arrived home till 5.30pm, then arrived at work at around 6pm). But because for some reason this particular day had been requested off by others, they said no. She took a day off sick, on my advice i might add.

I think this situation needs to be understood in terms of the previous context.

If your son had, on the whole, got to work on time, remembered his uniform, and did a good job whilst he was there.. then it's stupidly harsh for his manager to refuse to lend him a uniform.

However if your son had forgotten his uniform semi-regularly, was late for work, and generally couldn't be bothered.. I could understand the manager's reaction.

We're not perfect - everyone has bad days!!! I'm sure all the people who've slated the son on here have never had a bad day of their own making? There's been times where I've missed the bus and forgotten something at the same time, and I can see why the son was frustrated. However as I say, his previous performance at the job needs to be considered.

And like a lot of posters on this board you want to place blame everywhere other than where it is really due.

It's not rocket science to get to the bus stop on time and remember to bring the uniform that you know you have to wear. Frankly that's a bare minimum for most jobs - getting there on time, with what you need to do the job. And then when you have messed up telling the manager to "shove it".

As I said before, the OP's son needs to grow up and take some responsibility, and not rely on mummy running after them.

??? He wasn't late! You made that bit up!

And yes, he forgot his tshirt, but any decent manager would just give him another one to wear!!

I waitressed when I was younger, and when you get something spilt down your front (happened quite often!), the manager always has clean stuff for you to put on, as serving with food down your front doesn't look good!

But as the OP pointed out, it's nice to know that you lot are all perfect and have never made a mistake in your life.

If the manager has so little respect for the staff, then I'm not suprised he told them to shove the job.

As I said before, most workers would have just phoned in sick rather than walk 5 miles, so the manager probably lost himself a decent member of staff.

I'd say a reliable member of staff is a little more important than someone forgetting their work tshirt once!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

yeah but with an attitude of 'shove it' hardly makes them a decent member of staff.

Same here. We weren't even allowed to wear our uniforms outside of the restaurant, for hygiene reasons, and it was expected that they should be washed after each shift. Sometimes our shirts were simply not yet dry if we were working an early shift and had worked a late shift the night before! The manager always had spares, which provided we put in the washing machine with the tea towels at the end of the shift, we were always welcome to!

Regardless of whether or not the manager was unreasonable, there is no reason why your son should have to do a job where his efforts are not appreciated and is treated unfairly. Good for him for standing up for himself and voting with his feet.

Just want to point out that spare t-shirts and stuff will be there incase accidents happen and spilages etc occur. If everyone forgot their uniform and the manager gave alll the spares out, what would happen to the person who split a drink or ketchup down the top?

And lets be honest, if the son can't get along with a McD's manager, how will he cope with a manager in his later career?

    Not sure that's entirely fair.

I've told a couple of places where to shove it in the past (although, obviously, not in those words) because I *was* a decent member of staff and they were taking the Michael out of me.

I'm as dedicated, hardworking and patient as the next guy - so I take me walking out as a reflection on them, not me.

I'm sure everyone on here will now slate me, just like the OPs son...but all I can say is that if you haven't told someone where to shove their job, you've clearly never had the misfortune of working in a job *that bad*.

    Everyone has their limit.

Now we're talking about "what ifs...". In reality, it's 1 person forgetting 1 tshirt ONCE.

If everyone did it frequently, then the manager would have to say something.

Sounds like the McDs manager is the incompetant one, and who wants to work for someone like that. If the manager can't respect the staff and treat them as human beings, then they shouldn't be manager.

I'm sure he'll manage just fine in his future career if he has the ability to stand up for himself against petty managers!
