I sort of see both sides but to be honest, how many things did your son have on his list that day  :

    1. Get up.
    2. Get uniform.
    3. Get bus.

    Not exactly rocket science.

Your son needs to complain to McDonalds HR dept IN WRITING,

who should then give his new employer (if anyone else will have him) a written ref saying 'left his last job, cause told his manager to shove it'

So he normally gets a lift, but when the responsibility is his to get there on time he fails.

So did he arrive on time, or was he late for the start of his shift.

I suppose as well as giving him a lift, you normally make sure that he is dressed correctly when he leaves for work.

So the manager gave him an opportunity to keep his job, but he didn't want it.

Nothing like taking responsibility for your actions. Sounds like your son has some growing up to do.

How unbelievably rude, like a lot of other posters on this board.

Not everyone lives in a place where they have regular buses, so if you miss one, it can often mean waiting a couple of hours!

And McDonalds ought to have spare tshirts for staff who get ketchup/grease etc... spilt on their tshirts.

N9eav, I hope your son can find a job with a company that appreciates his dedication, as most people would just call in sick rather than walk 5 miles.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

A 5 mile walk? Why didn't he just wait for the next bus? And why did he have to walk home and back to pick up the t-shirt, instead of using the bus?

And then when you have messed up telling the manager to "shove it".

    Apparently that's dedication.

I don't think any company that requires a uniform will appreciate staff not turning up in it!

As other posters have said, remembering to wear your uniform is simple. If you know you don't get many buses you get there early!
  • I agree with what others have said. If you're given a uniform, you wear it. If I turned up at work tomorrow wearing jeans and a t-shirt, I'd be sent home to change too, the distance to and from work isn't the employers' problem, the lack of uniform is no one's fault but your son's, and I suggest he grow up a bit before finding another job.

Thanks for the comments. Some of you are particularly hostile and never make mistakes which is good for the country.

I agree with you however that my son was stupid to forget his shirt and miss the bus.

He was NOT late for work however. The buses in rural Cornwall are hopeless. The nearest bus stops a half mile from our house and does not always show up anyway.

The fact he walked 5 miles is commendable. The fact he forgot his T-shirt was stupid.

My point was that upon arriving on time for work and asking to borrow a T-shirt he was refused. There were spares there, because as one poster said what if they get it all messed up with foodstuff?

The shift maanger knew he could not just pop home to get another as he would miss most of his shift. My son's theory is that they were quiet and could easily function without all the staff on rota. The county show was on that weekend and so businesses elsewhere were dead. I just think it was totally inflexible and nasty to treat someone that way. He has worked there for 18 months and helps them make a tidy profit.

I know what they are like there. He has asked for a shift change so he does not finish at 11pm the night before an exam. They refuse to change it. So I went in there to ask them and it was no problem for him to finish early! They do bully their 'child labour'

Despite my son's failings (can't wake up in the morning and forgets things) he works hard and they get their pound of flesh out of him.
