"It's like dog training, men are simple creatures really, don't nag and argue spend that time boosting the little thing's egos, if that what it takes do it and you will get what you want."
One step at a time, tackle the utilities, then the shopping etc basically they are probably lazy and concerned they may have to do something themselves, if it is done that's it.[/quote]
Now then thats wasn't patronising in the slightest was it !!!
For the record I must be one of the male exceptions. Perhaps it was my strict upbringing by a father who was a Warrant Officer in the Marines or my ongoing career as a Procurement Manager but I have a very healthy respect for money.
I negotiate on just about anything & always read T&Cs as I will spot a get out clasue a mile away. I have walked away from tie in contacts with NTL, Vodafone & AOL on poor perormance with no excess charges - it can be done.
I know exactly what our family nett income is, what its spent on - I could list our expenses off the top of my head. I can quote the APRs on my loan & credit cards.
I pay the mortgage, council tax, utilities and most of the other monthly expenses and they remain in my name only.
I review the family expenses on a regular basis, looking for cost reductions where possible without affecting quality. I am not offended by own brand food - where the hell did that come from.
I dont buy something if I dont really need it. With regards to new gadgets, flat screen TVs, psps etc I wait unlike the 'early adopters'. That way the price comes down & bugs are fixed/ironed out.
Sorry for the rant but with regards to your 'hubbys' poor performance with finances blame the parents or your partners lack of discipline. Simple !! I earn therefore I spend type attitude is prevalent in todays society -- rant over.0 -
I was never particularly bad with money, but muddled through with the odd nasty surprise from time to time. What this site has done is concentrate my mind wonderfully on things financial and like davef I now know exactly where every penny is, what it's earning and am poised to shift it if there are better deals elsewhere. My OH giggled at me at first but now he can see the benefits (from a mortgage we could just about afford to one that is fully offset, thank god (MSE) for stoozing) and he tells everyone how clever I am. I get people asking me for advice now. So hang in there, he may well come around eventually if he's not bullied.0

I was informed that Tmobile was giving free 5pound credit if you register your pay as you go on their website. I informed OH that I was going to register and get the free credit.
He flew into a rage at the idea and said I was acting as if we were poor!
Can anyone understand this please!
you're acting as if you're rich, more likely!!
Rich people don't get rich by throwing away the chance of free money, do they??;)
I think there's some kind of inverted snobbery where some people have to buy the latest 72" plasma/blu-ray (whatever they're called now:p) TV to prove to others they are not poor.... But wasting money will definitely not make them rich!
Why not keep the same TV and pay off all the credit cards/mortgage etc. and retire to somewhere warm and sunny - that's not poor living!!
As MSE Martin Lewis says on the home page - it's about cutting bills not cutting back and being a sassy consumer. Companies try to screw us for profits. MoneySaving shows you how to (legally) screw them back.
If hubby protests, then have the money sent to a separate account, then take all the savings on holiday at the end of the year.:D Now my DH is on board I have to transfer big Quidco payments to the current account!

Hi everybody - you may think that this couldn't be true - BELIEVE ME. My neighbour friend has just celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary. Believe you me if I was married to him he would never had made it. She wanted to buy double glazing out of her own money but he turned the men away at the door. Latest - deep breath - They are entitled to free loft insulation and cavity walls and he has refused. Doesn't want those 'little holes' in the masonary. There is a whole string of things she has told me that makes my hair curl - how can men like that still exist. She has no video machine, no digital stuff or DVD - the list is endless. Its sad, I guess she is of the age when you don't walk out on your husband - I know what I would have done!member # 12 of Skaters Club
