Can't believe the "food" you can buy now

I guess that what I'm basically saying is that if the prepared item/substance/recipe/stuff contains more than one ingredient... then I'd rather make it meself
Yep I am with you on the veggies, I find it easier with my brood to stock up on bags of frozen veggies to dip into throughout the month.
Not so sure about the "more than one ingredient" thing though, I'm quite happy to buy mint ice cream mixed with choc chips

I'm not against 'frozen' per se. I also buy some frozen veg - mainly peas, sweetcorn and sometimes those small carrots, for when I want to bung a few in a casserole etc. However, I also believe that some frozen veg has more nutrients than fresh, so I'm OK with them.
However, I also agree that if I were to buy ready-made meals, I'd have to buy twice as many as they won't keep even an average Ticklemouse going for long and Mr TM eats for an army of meeces
I also have now problems buying enough online to use up the vouchers - there's only so much flour you can buy at one goI did actually bung a bottle of whiskey in there last time to get it over the threshold. However, CQ, did I read right in that Tesco deduct the price of alcohol from your total whan deciding whether you've spent enough to qualify? this could be why I had to ring and complain last time and they credited me back seperately.

They're doing all manner of stuff at the moment to stop these vouchers being used, due to people abusing the system so much, but it seems to vary across the country. I've twice had vouchers cancelled now - once when I'd ordered a bottle of brandy for my christmas cake, although when I called CS they decided to credit it back to me as they said they allowed a certain amount of alcohol on an order (bottle was about £7) but the second time was because of my tobacco!
It was only the one pack but I didn't dare ask for a credit because they usually exclude tobacco from any offers/vouchers in store so I guess I should just be thankful they've allowed it all these months!"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

as well as the frozen peas & sweetcorn, I like to have leaf spinach handy for curries
& I use frozen puff pastry. I make all my own shortcrust, but have only ever made puff once, the result wasn't any better than frozen & definitely not worth all the effort involved0 -

- Also, my friend who is a medical student, swears by this stuff in a can called 'all day breakfast' its beans, sausages and an egg in a can. She just wapps it in the microwave when she's on those ridiculously long shifts she has to do - am not sure i am convinced [/QUOTE]
My kids like them too, they take them camping, not sure how they cook them outdoors LOL...
I can't understand frozen roast potatoes or Yorkshire PUds, nowhere near as good as the real thing and I certainly wouldn't get away with sneaking them into our Sunday lunch.
My all time fave is ready made ice cubes, for heavens sake how hard is it to freeze some water? I doubt I could get them home from the supermarket before they melted what a waste of money LOL0 -
headchef wrote:You are so right about the baking isle in general. Couldn't find gelatine, only vege gel and it doesn't work! It worries me that OS like us won't be able to get the 'proper' things in a few years time.
In some supermarkets they put the gelatine in the pudding aisle near the jelly and rice pudd - sort of logical but not quite0 -
Just a note about the cartons of eggs, as calley said they are pasturised so that means they can be used for all the recipes that come with warnings about the danger of using raw eggs for vulnerable groups like chocolate mousse, mayonnaise and ice cream, so they do have a purpose!
my current favourite 'you really should make it yourself' thing is Marks & Sparks's porridge, why?0 -
In my local asda the stock cubes that I couldn't find were located, and I quote: "In the aisle next to the yoghurts"
They've had someone draw up a computer program that collates all the most popular purchases and put them in the aisles nearest the door.
So chilled chicken, and cream, is right near the door, and the frozen stuff is right at the far end. Whichever way you work through the store from one end to' tother you've either got your chicken mouldering away or your frozzed stuff defrosting for however long it takes you to do your shop.
The two areas used to be last as you did your shop so the frozen stuff could help keep your chilled stuff cool in the trolley. Or vice versa.
