Can't believe the "food" you can buy now

Options

As I'm not a buyer of ready made meals and frozen food (apart from veg - oh and ice cream :D ) please excuse me if you think this is a completely daft thing to post, but I cannot believe the complete pap the shops sell and pass off as proper food.

I can't abide their "cardboard" meals (serves 2 - 2 what? Goldfish?) that probably don't taste any better than the boxes they come in but frozen omelettes? I thought Yorkshire Puddings were bad enough but how much time and effort do you need for an omlette for crying out loud?!

Oh and frozen roast potatoes lol! Why?!!!

Has anything else caught your eye that you couldn't quite believe?

Lotta

My boyfriend is one of those people who is daft enough to buy all those kind of things. He's a lone parent to a daughter and he buys everthing for convenience. He laughs at me standing in the kitchen cooking for ages but I have the last laugh at the end of the month when I have money left over to put towards a holiday and he doesn't.

  • Ready made crumble topping. Rub butter into flour mix in sugar and its made, probably in the time it takes to open the packet and read the instructions on the packet stuff.
  • Ready made mashed potatoes!!!!! ... can't imagine what they would taste like

  • i have to laugh my mum uses all these :rotfl: ,
    I really don't understand why!
I make pretty much all my own food at a fraction of the price. I guess it's convienience or is that laziness.
mum says she doesn't have enough time, but I have a 4 week old baby + a very active 2 yo and still find the time. I really don't understand
never mind each to their own ;)

  • Bacon flavoured cheese.

(although an interesting point is - why doesnt cheesy flavoured bacon work?)

Cheesecake flavoured yoghurts (i dont know why i find this so gross)

Minature baby carrots already peeled and chopped up

Once I spotted a bag of 'diet' pre-packaged salad leaves in Sainsburys - in fact myself and a random guy spotted it at the same time and then we both suddenly noticed the other had a completely gobsmacked expression on their face - it was quite an amusing moment!

Also, Has anyone seen those Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 'Willy Wonka Chocolate Bars' ? A merchandising spin-off from the film.
Anyway, there is one called 'Nutty Surprise' well guess what the surprise is.......(cross my heart this is the truth!) - ........it contains NO NUTS! woo hoo! Surprise! your chocolate bar contains a freakish selection of artificial flavourings and other nasty chemicals - what a gift! I had hysterics for about half an hour after I read that one!
    :rotfl:

On an interesting point, some things i dont mind that have been 'convenianced'

    - Smash (yes, the powdered mashed potato stuff - cant help it, I just love it!)
    - Also, my friend who is a medical student, swears by this stuff in a can called 'all day breakfast' its beans, sausages and an egg in a can. She just wapps it in the microwave when she's on those ridiculously long shifts she has to do - am not sure i am convinced
I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!
Money to raise for tuition fees: £3000
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!!
  • When I do my shopping online with Tesco I look at stuff and think "I could make that myself" ... and much cheaper!

I rarely buy anything ready made or processed, which upsets DS sometimes when there's nothing he can just grab from the fridge for a quick snack without having to spend a few minutes preparing something (but that means he has no choice but to have a piece of fruit or a carrot or something :D ) but it also stops me nibbling out of boredom too! ;)

I used to have stuff like packs of sausage rolls, pork pies and ... would you believe ... those microwaveable burgers!!! :o ... in the fridge in case the kids wanted a quick snack but not these days! :D

Middle son hates it when he comes over cos he says "you've never got anything in to eat" even though the cupboards and freezer are full!

I was going to say this!!! Just today I met a Mum at the school who said she was going to pick some blackberries and then said "I'll have to pop to the shop for a crumble mix though"!!!!!

The more pre-packed stuff supermarkets sell the more chance of basic baking skills dying out.

Oh what a sense of deja vu after reading this bit, my house is the same. I'm the same as the op though, I love smash, it's my comfort food! OH and kids can't stand it though whistle.gif
