  • Yorkshire pudding batter mix: 'just add milk and an egg'. So it's just flour and salt in the pack then?! Saves you having to weigh it I supposse. And why pay 40p approx for 1kg of Value flour when you can pay (guess) 90p for (guess) 100grams in a packet.

I was in asda catching up on a few odds and ends that I missed when rushing my shopping the other week.

Wandering through the "Home baking aisle" looking for cornflour, ground rice, baking powder... flour...

..80% of the entire aisle was filled to the gunn'les with pre-mixed packs of things it only takes five seconds longer to assemble from a properly (what's the word that means you went out and bought all the basics and put them in your store cupboard? Well, whatever it is, that's the one I'm thinking of) <--that word pantry.

Buy a packet mix for yorkshire puddings... all you need to do is add your own egg and some milk!

    EH???

The entire recipe for yorkshire puds is some plain flour, some eggs, some milk...

Buy a packet mix for pancakes... guess what...?

I saw a snippet on the box that said somewhere in the region of sixty percent of eight year olds thought milk came in cartons and didn't know it came from cows. Or was it sheep? Or goats? Or llamas?...

  • Pre chopped carrots/mushrooms/onions. The ONLY reason I can think of for buying prechopped veg is if you are severly arthritic and then I can see the benefit of prechopped pumpkin or swede. But mushrooms?!
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • Talking of packet mixes, I'm amazed all those different cake mixes you can buy these days! Just add milk and an egg, I think they say, everything from scones to brownies to sponge mixes

Funny you mention that as my ex was telling me about a mushroom soup he'd made, and guess what he bought ... pre-sliced mushrooms :rotfl:

He said it's because he doesn't have time to prepare things these days, but I mean come on, how long does it take to slice a few mushrooms :D

I can see he has slipped into some very bad habits in recent years, and it aint down to me this time  ;)

  • I think it's called 'value added'. I saw some figures somewhere on the difference between the margins the supers make on processed food and what they make on unprocessed...and guess what...

ooh, also eggs in a milk carton near the baking section. how hard is it to crack an egg

I think you will find that most people in the catering Biz use these. I was watching a BBC 2 the otherday and the guy was doing about the science of food. And said that people in catering like himself use the eggs in tetra paks. Makes it easier rather than having to crack a zillion eggs and all the waste that goes with it.

Looks like it is making its way in to the everyday life.

Also If I was catering for lot of people and had to use a lot of eggs. I know which I would use.

Also I assume they are long life so you could keep it longer than a carton of eggs so it is handy for when needed.
