Can't believe the "food" you can buy now

  • Now that's the sort of example I was thinking of Alleycat, where I couldn't understand why some people buy these things. With a large family to feed the costs must be astronomical compared to buying fresh food and making it yourself!

Also, what lesson must that be teaching the next generation who have no idea where proper food comes from! :(

I think we've established they do have their place for some single people, as well as those that are disabled in some way so are restricted in what they can manage, but there are still many cases where it's just sheer laziness and/or lack of knowledge that makes me people buy it

Would a person living on there own really par-boil ONE potato, slice it and then roast it for 45mins to make ONE roastie. Then take one egg and beat into a yorkie batter to fill ONE individual pattie tin to make ONE yorkshire pudding? What a lonely job creating this meal for ONE only to have to sit and eat it in silence because you are eating alone. Yes! I've been guilty of sniffing at Aunt Bessie this and that in the past but having seen my lonely FIL pop one roastie and one yorkie on a tray alongside his sliced beef in gravy. I see they serve a need. I'm fortunate enough not to be in a position to have to use them (I have others to cook for and eat with. I no longer sniff and am embarassed I ever did

Come on now Math, who would cook like that anyway and how can you only eat one Yorkshire.:D I would make at least 6 yorkshires in a 12 hole tin and use the spare holes to do 6 roast spuds, eat what I felt like for dinner and freeze the leftovers ( but highly unlikely with the Yorkshires) They would be eaten cold with jam on for me supper  I guess it is a case of how you choose to live and I'm not quite decrepid yet so I cook.
As an aside I've made a personal decision to only buy bogofs and special offers from now on, I went through "fixture ferrets" with a fine tooth comb, worked out a shopping route and managed quite well, I think that over about a month or so I should be stocked up to just about normal, some things never ever seem to go on bogof though, like butter and milk - So I got them from LIDL. I will however need more storage to make this viable in the long term.

Actually your right in some respects - The ready meals are very handy for people like my Grandad. My Granny only died last year and she started teaching him to cook when she found out she had terminal cancer - I think he actually quite likes the fact he has had to learn something new - its kept on his toes at 96! and he's a dab-hand at the old roast dinners.

Eliza your wonderful Grandad sounds like someone we should all aspire to be like - never stop learning!

Just watched a programme where 5 people dine at each other's home and mark the event accordingly. The narrator made the comment that today's host had 'made everything from scratch'. Must have a strange idea what 'from scratch' means as ready made pastry was used for the fruit pies!
Apart from that the young man did appear to have made a very good three course meal. However, the guests were not very nice, one woman in particular was very rude and aggressive  and would have given you indigestion.

I hear what you're saying Mr Proctalgia, When my oldest was 3yrs old I used to have to make half a odzen yorkies just for him. No meat, no veg, just a mountain of yorkshire puddings covered in gravy. I've been known to have more than one myself also:o

This isn't as daft as it sound Lotta! I've seen ready made bubble 'n' squeak in the chiller. A dish designed to use up all your left-overs what we call a "cobbled muck-up" at chez MATH now on sale maybe soon they will also sell frozen bags of left-overs too:rotfl:

I caught that programme last week while away on holiday. And last week they had a fitness guy and the 3 course meal he served up was about 600 calories. You did have to minus all the wine they drank though. LOL!!!!!!!!

He spent £25 on one bottle of wine it was about 13.5 % and was organic.

One the women last week raided her friends for allotment for veggies so they where only a few hours old when they sat down to eat.

I did hear that someone who was a food writer over head a couple of 19/20 year old girls in a supermarket chatting one day. One suggested getting dried pasta the other said she did not know how to cook it

    Ummmmm look on the packet.

  • Accepted - there are people for whom the 'ready mades' are a blessing (and those pregnant ones for whom the bags of ice cubes are a neccesity :D) However, most comes down to laziness and/or a lack of education. However, I think that in the main, we are talking about people who buy packets of ready to mix/bake/eat whatevers because they are under the illusion that they are better for you, cheaper than 'proper food' or they couldn't make that particular dish themselves.

Let's face it, if you are a healthy, able-bodied individual, with access to a normal kitchen and in possession of an IQ even only slightly higher than the average pudding basin, how difficult is it to make a peanut butter and jelly sarnie? (I have actually developed a liking for these :)) Never mind, I'm sure it's more satisfying to buy it from your usual perveyor of fine frozen foods, than think about or even learn to make basic meals/snacks

I cook for one, but I also cook for LOADSAPEOPLE. They're all me. They just live in the fridge or the freezer until I'm ready for them.

I have never in my whole life cooked one roast or baked potato, or one Yorkshire pud, or one anything.

Pre cooked, pre-prepared, pre-frozen things have no part in my life at all. Well, OK, I admit to things like mince 'cos it's cheaper than buying fresh and then freezing it to keep it safe (see another thread).

I'll admit to frozen peas too 'cos I'm a sucker for the "frozen before the pods could possibly reach your shops" promo.

But honestly, an item frozen raw so it reaches me relatively unharmed is fine by me.

I guess that what I'm basically saying is that if the prepared item/substance/recipe/stuff contains more than one ingredient... then I'd rather make it meself :)

One more thing though, the portion sizes are absolutely ridiculous!! I slid the cardboard sleeve off one the other day to have a look and it was measly! Now, I am famed for having hollow legs (thats where my dad reckons I store it all, lol) but this was was just daft. I would have needed at least two to even try and fill me up. But then I guess I don't sit there all evening scoffing crisps and cake  .

Though we are having cod, chips (homemade, honest!) and frozen peas tonight. I do buy frozen bags of veges as they are useful to just bung in when I'm tired and not in the mood to spend ages chopping. I'm not lazy, just tired. Not having had more than three hours straight sleep since the munchkin was born!! But I definately draw the line at frozen pre chopped mushrooms, I can't even begin to imagine how they must taste _pale_
