So far, so good for me. Opened an account in March but I've only been moving about 40 quid in and out to test them out. So far the transfer rates have been acceptable.

As soon as the 6% promotion on ING expires I think I'll be shifting a bit more over to them.

I recently applied to set up a Hi-Save joint account, which went through quite smooth, but when my wife tried set up an account in her own name, they transferred the funds into the joint account.

I have e-mailed them to sort things out, but as of this moment I am awaiting a response.

do icici ever answer emails or is it just me???

i keep emailing to ask if i can make the initial deposit by bank transfer or paypal or something more convenient than sending a cheque

Yes they answer email and quite quickly.
I asked them what my sort code is so I can make payment by Bacs and they gave it to me the same day.

I don't think they will accept Paypal as it would be too costly for both of you.

I applied for the savings account 16/05, sent off my cheque 19/05 for £1.00 as requested by them, received e-mailed deatils of my account number and sort code 25/05, but haven't had my password sent to me yet to enable access to the account. Called them today to enquire as to when I'm likely to receive it and was told it usually takes 7-10 working days after the account number details are sent, so could take another week !
Apparently I can transfer money in though.

Looks like it takes 2-3 weeks from application stage to have a fully operational account.

EDIT : Password arrived 02/06 so 17 days in total. A little slow, but hassle free so far. Have set up a £1 transfer to see how long it takes first time.

And the winner is ... ICICI !

I promised to let everyone know who won the race out of ICICI and Birmingham Midshires. I finally had a working ICICI account exactly 7 weeks (almost to the minute, strangely enough) after applying for it. To achieve this, I had to chase them up twice: after 3 weeks and again after 6. But, hey, it's worth it for the great interest rate.

And I've now transferred a large sum of money into this account - successfully, i.e. it is confirmed on my statement.

BTW, I've also seen the crappy error message "Marky Mark" quoted. But I didn't have the problem Lee mentioned.

And what about Birmingham Midshires? They've taken three and a half weeks to date. So far I have received neither a userid nor a password from them, and I shan't bother to chase. This is surprising, really, as the product is run by the Halifax. At least it shows ICICI aren't the only internet savings account with start-up problems.

I therefore recommend ICICI. But do allow 7 weeks for set-up, and don't be afraid to badger them a bit.

Yeah, I found mine impossible to read as they had not bothered to print the password - just sent me the blank skip :rotfl:
