Cheshire/welsh boarder i have seen no butterflys (only cabbage whites) hopefully will get some when the budlia flowers. Also only seen bumble bees no honey bees. I will try and leave a patch of nettles somewhere for next year

Seen lots of cabbage whites too over the weekend, as well as the usual red admirals on the hebes, but earlier this evening I was mesmerised by a little powder blue flutterby darting amongst the flowers in my patio pots. I've seen them before but the name escapes me.

'Fraid all the blue ones I see are Common Blues, as I cant tell the difference between them! However, there are more of the little blues about this year, including in my garden, which is definitely a first.

Red Admirals are another matter though because, despite visiting a lot of nature reserves, I've yet to see one this summer(and I have a quarter acre wild garden practically next to mine - fortunately downwind!)

How about a patch of clover? I stopped cutting the grass for a couple of weeks recently and allowed the clover to come and flower and the bees flocked to it but now you've got me wondering whether these were honey or bumble bees

Just googled images and still none the wiser :rotfl:

I always imagined bumble bees to be those huge furry black and yellow striped ones (got plenty of those on the buddleja and hebes) but the ones on the clover were much smaller but still furry - a different species of bumble bee or a honey bee?

I don't think this was a Common Blue, but I can't say for certain what it actually was as I didn't take notice of the underside of the wings, possibly a Holly Blue or Adonis Blue having looked at a few pics

I have a feeling I'm wrong about the red admiral too having just looked at some pics on google and think what I'm actually seeing in the garden are Small Tortoiseshells, easy mistake for an amateur to make, mind ;)

ETA: Ahhhhhh, having had a look at this page I'm now convinced it was a Holly Blue I saw :D

This morning, along with the usual Small White, of which there seems to be an abundance recently, I've spotted a Comma and another Small Tortoiseshell :j

I've also been paying closer attention to the bees coming into my garden following a post above and have spotted at least 6 different species so far! I didn't realise they were so diverse and different!

Looking at the site below it seems that all the bees I've spotted are actually bumble bees, just different species - fascinating! :D
