I had a ladybird land on my shoulder yesterday, It was only small (two spots).
I also get lots of cabbage white butterflies in my garden.
I live right next to a wood, so get lots of birds, bumblebees & sparowhawks fliying around.

  • to get them you must plant for them
i planted my garden specifically for wildlife and me , the bees love forget me not , scabious ,monarda ,raspberries, poppys, lemon balm ,comfrey ,naturtiums and canary creeper to name a few.
the butterflies love scabious , verbena bonariensis, holly ,lavender, budleia, asclepsia milk weed to name a few .
grow more of these types and youll have them coming back ,hopefully more each year.
youll also get hoverflies and other beneficial insect , this year ive even had damselflies ,never had them before.
shrubs like pyracantha ,wisteria and even privet when in flower will atract them

  • Hi, I am down in South Devon and I have seen quite a few butterflies this year. Like everyone else they were on my lilac bushes in the early summer, and now they seem to love my tomato plants and my lilies. However, the place I see them all summer is over in my 'wild' area. This is a corner of the garden that I just let run to nature. It has bineweed (that I keep back under control) and stinging nettles etc plus an area where we dumped all our garden clippings etc before we got a compost bin last year. The ivy runs riot over there!

Butterflies seem to love nettles for some reason, so I see plenty of cabbage whites over there. The ones on my tomato flowers are fritillaries - brown, smallish and speckled and today I counted six fluttering around.

I think it probably was although I didn't get a very good look at it as I just brushed it off my shoulder when I felt something biting so only caught a glimpse before it disappeared. It looked more orangey than red and had lots of spots so I suspect it was a harlequin of which I've spotted several in my garden this summer :(

They seem to be around in good numbers now and a few different species.
I have been chasing them out of the greenhouse and conservatory all day they seem to "droop" very quick when behind glass in this heat, there have been a few tiny blue ones around and loads of white, not all cabbage I think, some were large and others I am not sure of with a green tinge to their wings when in the resting position.
If you think this has helped make my day and hit the thanks button:beer:
