I have buddeliah and honeysuckle and some rambling roses a few clematis and some nice giant poppies but still no butterflies. Our garden is nicely messy we dont go in for well-maintained or minimalist theres something different around every corner and also lots to fall over

North London: my cat came in chomping on a Cabbage White the other day. At least, the bit hanging out of his mouth looked like a Cabbage White...
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

    Was it a Cinnabar Moth?

Haven't seen many of these for a while, but my DW saw one last week.

    That cinnebar moth is beautiful!

KAAT_LADY, I didn't mean just your own garden being nice and messy. What I meant was, with the trend for 'minimalist' gardens the butterflies are losing the garden battle generally. I was just commenting on the general trend.

I am quite lucky in that I have a fairly large garden with a 'wild' area, and take what my OH dubs a 'lazy faire' approach to the garden (geddit?!). Basically, it's only a weed if you don't want it there, so other than the really unsightly stuff or weeds that threaten to choke my own plants, I tend to live and let be. The wildlife likes it, I think it looks pretty, and I know that most traditional gardeners would have me shot at dawn for my gardening sins, but sod 'em, it's my garden!

silvercharming there was no offence taken about a nicely messy garden I like it like it is. By the way I just mentioned to OH about cinnebar moths and he saw them last week hatching, never told me so I missed it but he says they like the outdoor geranium I dont know what its name is and they go on that .
I like your attitude about your weeds and gardening
