I went speed dating once. I thought it was awful; it's actually a very vacuous and superficial situation. I reckon I'm the sort of person who someone has to get to know a bit before understanding me. Either that or I need to give it a few more goes; actually I think a bit of practice might help. I think I was too nervous and talked too much rubbish TBH.

Datingdirect do keep advertising social events in Bristol though. I'm curious, but once again I wonder if they're a good thing. I'd rather meet someone in a real situation. Difficult.

I repeat the old 'join a class' thing. It's a great way to meet new people, and even if there's no one there to take your fancy, some people do like to matchmake...and as well as having a new skill you'll find yourself with a few new friends too.:D

The same thing is written over and over in women's mags, so much so that there was a run on car maintenance classes which ended up having only women attending, since the women were all thinking that's where the men would be.... :rotfl:

  • I've not found pubs or clubs any good for meeting like minded people. Yet.
try social clubs, classes or meeting someone at work/through mates etc. if you're going to clubs/pubs with the intention of looking for someone this may be reason why it's not working- you will meet whoever when you meet them. just be yourself. you could try responding to ads in local paper. don't know anyone who's tried the internet dating route but from some of replies above it seems you can have success with it. if you want to try this route don't pay for it.

I joined matchdotcom and the same thing happened, got an e-mail and then got ask to pay £65 ish to read the message, it was from a nice guy but came to nothing at all, he only wanted to msm at midnight(?) was in a band, had a full social life, fulltime job etc etc, did wonder exactly when he would fit in the time for dating!

The next couple were a bit of a dead loss too, for different reasons, now been doing the online thing for about three months, people tend in my experience to fall in to two camps, those who want to meet up immediately ( wat too fast for me, would prefer to e-mail / msm for a bit, or even talk on the phone) and those who can be hardly bothered to reply to emails and when the do it is all one sided chat, with all the effort on my part!

I am giving it one last go, infact I am going on a first date tonight - very scary, for a girl like me anyway, last date was about 5 years ago, with my last bf, only been single for 5 months eek, but he asked and well I suppose there is no point joining that type of thing if you haven't got the guts to go though with it. Although he has fallen in to the really fast camp, couple of e-mails, one phone call, so not absolutely sure that I am doing the right thing!

This is my last attempt with this site though, my advise would be pay the money if you can easily afford it but just be realistic about the people that you are meeting, I always get quite excited just to be a bit dissappointed!

I've not been going out specifically to try and find a partner. I just do what I want to do for my own pleasure, but I often hope that I might find someone. I still think that pubs and clubs are the most places to meet someone.

re the classes; I used to go to dance classes. Actually I was really into it, we did Lindy Hop which is fast and furious technical jive sort of stuff. Loved it. However, I lost interest when I decided that I needed to find a class that had a better age range -loads of nicely married and older people at the classes. Great laugh and all that, but the LeRoc and Ceroc classes have a younger set. However, I think the modern jive is pants compared to the original stuff.

  • Busy reading a book called 'Millions of Women Are Waiting to Meet You: A Story of Life, Love and Internet Dating' which was half price on amazon - very amusing book so far :)

  • Right, I've got 4 messages/favourites there now and I've decided that at £6 each then that's an acceptable price. So, tomorrow when I'm sober (oops) I'm going to pay the money and move forwards. Keep you updated.

  • Suppose you could pay the £24, and if they're all rubbish then don't pay again?

How about general chat rooms rather than official dating sites?

Oh and try search engines own dating sites, eg MSN UK, Yahoo.

  • It's really odd - all I've done is add a bit to my profile about buying my own place and being content and suddenly I get loads of attention.

Free dating sites attract loads of chancers. At least with paying they've made an decision.
