The others are right - it's red Valerian. It seeds like mad and will take over the garden. Enjoy the flowers if you like it but cut them down before they start making seeds!
  • Found this growing amongst the gravel, coming out of the domed hebe (I know there are pansies mixed in with it)

I think it's a type of vetch, which can quite persistent if you don't get out every scrap. There are probably many websites that can advise on how to get rid !

    Good luck

    Vetch or Tares

But it's not all bad. The root contains nitrogen-fixing properties, rather like runner beans, and it's used as a green manure to improve the soil.

When I find it in a border, I hoe it away being careful to leave the root in the soil so that it can continue doing some good. The top of the plant goes into the compost bin - and that's good too.

It's a flippin' blighter in the lawn and on paths, though.

Many thanks...I will remove it...it's all tangled up around the random pansies so will have to be careful.

I REALLY need to get a compost bin!!

Definately a Prunus sp. or apple. Might be blackthorn.

there are no blackthorns near where I live, so I dont think it will be blackthorn but prunus or apple has potential as I very vaguely remember sticking some pips in a pot, I just didnt think it was this one

    I've had these.

My money is on it being a willow; possibly goat willow, or similar.

I didn't let mine survive, :o so I cannot confirm this, but the leaves look right. Willows can be spread by the wind.

Oh!!!! I'm so happy!!! I saw one exactly like this in my garden yesterday and didn't know what it was. My little one had planted apple seeds in the garden and I can't wait to go and show her now. Here's hoping

Looks like apple to me too.

What I tend to do with attractive weeds is bung them in a pot with some soil or any old compost and see what happens. It's costing me nothing to do, but I've had some nice surprises.

Also if you use compost in the bed there could be anything in it. Apple would be a common ingredient od compost, either home made or bought (bought often comes from local council collections) just coz we eat so many in the UK. Mind you prunus, cherry, blackthorn, willow and so on wouldn't be unusual either.

You have to grow it now and tell us all!
