Newgirl is dead right - leave even a tiny cm of stem on or in the soil and it will sprout into a new nightmare, and that's not to mention leaving a bit of actual root.....

Heart-shaped leaves? If you're very unlucky it could be a Russian Vine. Are some of the stems reddish?

If so, you must kill it with Roundup or some such systemic weedkiller that will get down to the root, and the sooner the better.0 -
We have lots of what I now know is called bindweed at our allotment. It comes back again and again and again. I always thought it looked similar to morning glory so thankyou Newgirl for confirming that. The bindweed near us isn't in flower yet ... hopefully that does tie in with what your son has as the Russian Vine doesn't seem so nice!0

It's not Russian Vine, that I'm almost certain of. I still think it's most likely to be bindweed, although now morning glory has been suggested I'm not sure sure any more
It was in bud the other day but no flowers yet to identify it with. I'll be over there on Sunday to start doing some clearing work on the garden so will have another look at it and take a couple of pics if it still hasn't flowered.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Took this picture near to the edge of Grand Ganyon (South Rim, AZ). It was in a fenced off area of an old Uranium mine (taken with a zoom lens, I wasn't trespassing, honestly!). It was around 5ft tall & the only one we could see in the area. We showed it to several locals, including park rangers, & none of them had ever seen anything like it before. Would love to hear from anyone who might know it. Picture was taken in August 2006.

It was most definitely bindweed!!!!!!
And boy, there was a lot of it! I still don't think we've got it all out as it had managed to wrap itself around just about every shrub and plant in the garden
Now they know how to recognise it I've instructed them to pull out any they see growing back asap, along with the numerous ash trees that we found sprouting up in the garden
There were some quite pretty plants and shrubs hiding beneath all the weed, some of which I couldn't identify and I forgot to take my camera  One in particular I really like the look of and wondered if anyone might recognise it from a description?
It had long, quite green and fleshy, stems rising about 6ft from the base and the leaves were green tinged with a little purple on the new growth. It had the most beautiful lilac/purple flower that sort of hung down in a similar style to a wisteria flower but much smaller. Any ideas?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

I want one. I don't normally show any interest in growing things I can't eat, but I could scare small children with that.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
