Did any of you buy it on HP or with a credit catd? if so get these companies involved also, they may be jointly liable
  • I bought my TWF 1901 DVD LCD from Makro in January 2007. It cost about £250. Last Monday (11/08/08) I turned it off as usual. My daughter went to switch it back on half an hour later to find it wouldn't switch on. The green on light comes on for about 2 seconds, then goes back to the red standby light and the screen remains black. As so many of you have experienced this fault after around 18 months usage (if you're lucky), it seems as if there is an inherent fault with the sets. I am going to try Makro for redress, but am not holding out much hope. If I get no joy I shall use Gooner045's link to write to Makro head office. It was good while it lasted, but I would definitely expect a TV set to last longer than 1yr 7mths. One TV was bought when my daughter was 18 mnths old and lasted until she was 12 before repairs were needed. Thank you all for your posts, at least we have good evidence that these are not isolated cases.......also, in the manual there is no technical support listing nor any manufacturer's address/details........I wonder why
  • Hi, my TWF 32" tv has blown up a massive flash of blue light came out the back! Seems to be an inherent fault however sainsburys dont seem to interested. I phoned my store today and was told they couldn't deal with me and I needed to phone tomorrow and speak to a manager. I doubt I will get anywhere. From reading the posts on here I think Sainsburys should take more responsibility as they have sold these faulty goods.

Anyway will keep you posted to how we get on!!

    Hi

My twf 32" lcd has today stopped working whilst my daughter was watching her dvd. It just went pop and then we got a terrible burning smell. Obviously I decided to look on here to see if anybody has had any problems and lo and behold I came across this thread. I suppose I should be grateful that mine lasted until today. How peculiar though that there should be such an issue. Can't seem to find any other info elsewhere to say whether or people have had issues although on the av forums someone returned theirs after 8 months as it had stopped then. I am going to try e-mailing Sainsbury's and see how I get on and will state that I have checked forums which has identified a common problem, fingers crossed that I get somewhere.

  • buy cheap, buy twice... You wouldn't expect that with a decent brand but from a brand that was costing 60% you should expect it to last 60% the time. Now this may be less than the duration it should have lasted but say you'd expect a brand name such as Sony to last 5 years (yes you'd be peeved if it broke after 5 years but it's what could be deemed reasonable) this means a no name should last say 3 years. Now if Sainsburys can't get it fixed (or can't be bothered) and can't find a similar replacement then they only need to refund you the amount less fair usage so you could see yourself coming away with less than £200 here - tbh I'd doubt they'd pull that as it's bad press and can they be bothered going to court (will cost more in the long run with their own costs and legal fees etc) but beware they may dig their heels in.

I must disagree there, theres a lot of electrical equipment out there that is identical and the only difference is the casing and the badge. My Mother in Law purchased a LCD in Currys and it was the same software that I have on my ASDA purchase the only difference is the infared receiver is square instead of round. Argos were selling the same tvs with a different badge on them with an average price difference of > £50.

I purchased a LCD 26" tv from Asda, it went wrong two years later and they refunded me the money, the good thing was the 32" model had dropped in price so i got an upgrade to a bigger tv for 50quid. And I have had this one for a year and if it breaks even out of warranty they will take it back and give me a refund or exchange. ASDA are really quite good.
"Well, that sounds like a pretty good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger, and you give me my phone call"

That's good that Asda are so accomodating. I just hope my local Sainsbury's are, although I am not holding out much hope.

I'm afraid I don't have a manual to hand and I think TWF are no longer trading.

I went into Sainsbury's and spoke to a lovely lady who refered me onto the electronic desk's manager. They said they could not do anything and gave me an 0800 no through Sainsbury's to contact to which my OH did. They said they can do nothing and are not aware of a recurring fault, however he did say that by coincidence he had received two phone calls relating to the same problem today!! So now we are still awiting reply from e-mail and will take it to highest level we can.

Have you seen the quality of some of the Sony Brand tv's, no better than some of the cheap brands and made in Turkey with in my opinion sub-standard components.

    Hi Everyone

    My husband has received this:

    Dear X

Thank you for your email. I am sorry that the television you purchased from our store on 27 December 2006 no longer works. I can appreciate your disappointment and understand you would like it repaired free of charge or a replacement television.

All electrical items bought within the EU have a one year guarantee. After that has run out, it is the manufacturers’ responsibility to repair items if they breakdown due to a known fault. You can find further information about consumer rights on the Office of Fair Trading website at http://www.oft.gov.uk.

We are aware that TWF has gone into liquidation and understand the situation this leaves you and a number of our customers in. After taking the circumstances into consideration, we would be happy to offer a refund for the television. To claim this, please return the television and all its components to our XXXXXXXXX store with some proof of purchase. This can be your receipt, credit card statement or debit card statement.

When you visit the store please ask for XXXXXXXXXX, the General Merchandise Manager, at the customer service desk. He will be able to deal with your issue and provide a refund. You may like to call the store to arrange a time to meet Ben before you make the journey. The contact number is XXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Thank you again for letting us know about your experience. I hope you will find my offer satisfactory and that your issues are resolved to your satisfaction.

    Kind regards

    X
    Customer Manager
