32" TWF LCD TV bought in Sainsburys and packed up within 17 months!

I Bought the 32" TWF LCD3241ID LCD television from Sainsburys in Dec 2006 for £399.99. Went to switch it on on Sunday and it won't work! Tried changing the fuse with one from another television and still no joy.
After some investigation online I found there have been a few instances of this happening, I proceeded to go to an information site listing the sale of cusumer goods act 1979 to find out what my rights were. Having looked at it and reading section 14, subsection 2b it reads in a nutshell that the goods sold should match expectations that a reonable person would hold for a products durability. In my mind and others I have spoken to 17 months for £400 is not a resonable assumption.
I went into the Sainsburys I bought it from tonight to speak to the manager who first told me that as it is out of warranty he didn't really think there would be anything that he would be able to do, which seems to contravene what the implication of the quick fact sheets say on the BERR website, which says it is the seller, not the manufactor, who is responsible if the goods do not conform to contract. I pointed this out to him and he said he would ask for advice and phone me back.
I received the phone call a little later and he said he had spoken to somebody and they have said Sainsburys only offer a 12 month guarantee and gave me a number for TWF and Sainsburys careline, which of course shut at 18.00!
Has anyone else had any experience of this fault and what resolution did you reach?
It would seem to me with my laymans appreication of the law that they are trying to squirrel out of it!

Hi pumbacat, yes I have exactly the same problem, a blown power board! Funnily enough it's about the same duration as well!
I'd love to hear if you were able to progress this with Sainsbury's?
Thanks0 -
Trying to fob you off, its their responceablity,
go see tradeing standards, they will advice you.
A judge ruled this 12mths warrenty for that sum of money
is not good enough, the shop should send it away for repair,
or give you a replacement or refund

buy cheap, buy twice... You wouldn't expect that with a decent brand but from a brand that was costing 60% you should expect it to last 60% the time. Now this may be less than the duration it should have lasted but say you'd expect a brand name such as Sony to last 5 years (yes you'd be peeved if it broke after 5 years but it's what could be deemed reasonable) this means a no name should last say 3 years. Now if Sainsburys can't get it fixed (or can't be bothered) and can't find a similar replacement then they only need to refund you the amount less fair usage so you could see yourself coming away with less than £200 here - tbh I'd doubt they'd pull that as it's bad press and can they be bothered going to court (will cost more in the long run with their own costs and legal fees etc) but beware they may dig their heels in.0

Under the sale of goods act, goods are to be expected to last a reasonable amount of time, up to 6 years in the UK ( 5 years Scotland ) We are not talking about a £10 kettle here, it's a £400 T.V you are entitled to expect it to last longer than it has, if you can find others with the same problem, then maybe it's an inherent manufacturing fault.
Here's is a link to a template letter to send to Sainsbury's head office.

I suggest you use recorded delivery always.
I just did Argos for a faulty washing machine out of warranty and ended up with a brand new one costing more money, so stick with it.

hi
I am facing the same problem. My TV bought in December 2006, stopped working, no power on since last one week. even i had a problem with the remote earlier its not working anymore. and now whole TV has gone off. Can u Please let me know in what ways you are trying to deal with sainsburys so that i can follow the same way. Its really frustating for me.
thanks a lot0 -
I brought one of these televisions in February 2007, and it worked fine until 10days ago. Just stopped working. Would also be pleased to know if the previous people have had any luck from sainsbury's.:mad:0

Just thought I would add my deceased TV to the list, one day all was fine next day nothing!
This would appear to be an inherent fault in the product, and there must be many others who have not posted here. If Sainsburys don't do something to help then perhaps we should all 'Try something new today!' - Tescos !!:rotfl:0 -
I know someone who had the same problem and got an exchange for another TV to the price paid at the time it was bought.
Sainsburys are aware of the problem with these tvs  and apparently they no longer sell TWF products.
My friend had to get proof of purchase and you can use a receipt, a bank statement showing the purchase or if you used a nectar card it could be recorded.
I would recommend that you guys email or write to Sainsburys and point out the sales of goods act etc. and how disappointed you are.
If you do not get a decent response reiterate and insist that it is dealt with at the highest possible level. Best wishes peeps0 -
I wrote to the Sainsburys store where I bought my 26" TWF TV, telling them of the problem I have with it, & quoted my consumer rights as suggested, & have had a reply denying responsibilty, and that their guarantees are only valid for a year etc etc. They have given me a number for Siemsson, who they say will be able to "discuss" the problem I have with the TV. The number is 01403 085150. They deny any knowledge of a fault with this brand of television. I will call this number & persue Sainsburys some more. Anyone else had any luck with refunds or replacements?:mad:0

I also bought one of these in Jan. 07. Red button stopped working about 2 weeks ago. After reading this forum I contacted Sainsburys who told me that TWF had gone out of business. I wrote to them under the consumer rights. Had a reply today offering £200.00's worth of vouchers as a good will gesture. Anybody else had a response from them?0
