Yes of course, it would have to be considered an additional cost of the holiday and split fairly.

You'd be an odd set of friends if you didn't want to split the cost and help him out. After all he hired the car in his name to help you all out and did most of the driving.

Anyone questioning this really should take a good look at their moral standards, and their group of friends (or lack of them!)

Of course I'd contribute, unless the driver was acting recklessly and I'd said "hey, I think you should be more careful or you'll hit something" - or something like that. Even then I'd probably contribute after giving them a piece of my mind LOL

It can't really be compared to them dropping something expensive, as in this hypothetical case you're all sharing the benefit of the car and the only reason he had to drive in the first place is because nobody else could be bothered to learn to drive :)
  • Of course I would pay my share, and if I was the driver I would expect the others to offer to pay. If no one else wanted to do the driving then everyone shares the risk of a bump and the associated costs.
  • Of course! I'd only not contribute if they had been driving badly and continued to do so after being told. Mind you if it was that bad I would have got out the car as well probably.

Agree with the general consensus. As long as the driver was being careful then I think you'd have to split it.
  • I can't honestly believe that you'd all contribute to the repairs!

If a friend was giving me a lift and on the way they hit a pothole I wouldn't pay for the wheel and tyre repair. Similarly if they damaged their car while parking I wouldn't foot the bill for their misjudgement!

If I was on holiday in a hire car I wouldn't contribute either!

It's a different story if we came back to the hire car and someone else had damaged it and fled without leaving their details but there's no way I'd be footing the bill for a friend's misjudgment.

And as for the other comments, of course the car was being badly driven, they caused £500 of damage while parking. That's bad driving in my book!

Absolutely and without question or hesitation.

He should be asking for some stress compensation from the three of us for taking it on in the first place too! What a brilliant friend to have.

As a driver, I always hire a car while on holiday, wither I am alone, with my husband or with a group of friends. If I hit the lamppost then I would pay for it all. This is because I don't believe that the fact that I had passengers caused the accident. It was my mistake and It could easily have happened with or without passengers. In fact the bill wouldn't even be an issue, I would be more concerned that I put passengers in danger.
If I was reversing into a space and it caused £500 worth of damage, then I was reversing way too fast. So no I would not pay unless I knew that my friend could not afford it, in which case I would offer some money to help.

I too would too be hesitant to pay for his incompetence. Yes he was doing a nice thing for the others but that does not make them liable.

If blame lies 100% with the driver then why should others pay for his mistake?

I can confirm this - I caused £430 damage to my car by reversing into a lamppost in a carpark - I *was* going way too fast :)
