  • Which OS are you using? If not Windows XP do you have WinZip installed? (Windows XP can handle .zip files automatically, other OSes like Windows 98 can't and you need to download and install it separately.
  • Chippy,
Yes i have winzip 8.1 sr-1 installed and i also run XP. Any other thoughts?
    Thanks
  • OK, thanks for that info. As a workaround, right-click the link and choose Save Link As... That should download the .zip file and ask where you want to save it.

See ZIP Files: Click to download takes me to blank screen for a possible solution,, and post back if you don't understand anything on that thread.

Also, I'm assuming that you're using Internet Explorer - reply here if not :)

I have no idea what all that means, can someone explain in plan english to me, I dont know enough about computers and files to sort it out on my own please help. Thanks... Kate
  • jate, which operating system does your computer use? (E.g. Windows XP, 98, Mac OS etc?)

Hi.. thanks... l am using windows xp. I just downloaded a file called winzip but it was still asking me for a password... grrrr.. wish l was a clever puter person
  • It definitely shouldn't ask you for a password. Try downloading the zip file again, save it your Desktop (or My Documents etc.) and double click to open.

NB Windows XP can handle zip files automatically so there was no need to install WinZip.

Thanks again, I have deleted winzip now, and re tried to download the spreadsheet, I have a new message that says " cannot change the document C:\DOCUME ~1HP_OWNE....\050805budget.xls. The document is a read only or is open by another user or application, to change this file, save it in a different filename" Which I tried... with no luck I do not have it open anywhere and it is not being used by another user... after reading that message I clicked ok.. then another message came up saying "This document is password proctected" the same message I told you about earlier...oh why oh why cant life be simplier... this is getting as bad as my debts....grrrr.. thanks for your patience tho................... Kate
  • So can you open the .zip file now? The file inside the zip file is 050805budget.xls and it looks like you're trying to open that file directly from the zip file. When you open the zip file (Windows XP calls them compressed folders), on the LHS there should be an option to Extract files. Click that and save the .xls file in My Documents. Then open that file.

Yes... Chippy, I get to the point where it is a file with 050805 but when l try to open that.. thats when l am again getting a few problems and am not able to get to it, it now says the file is corrupted.. I am going to go to bed now... have been at this all day trying to open it, looks like I will have to get someone in to sort it out for me, tho that defeats the object of trying to save money... but its going to be simplier for you... it must be headache trying to help someone without seeing what they are actually trying to do, I will get back to you tomorrow if that is ok with you.. then after that I will have to seek help closer to home... Thanks for all you assistance so far.. your a Gem.
