fruitcake wrote:hmm, not sure if this useful to anyone, I logged into the main costco site ( US based), and enquired about membership, haven't received a areply yet, but the site seems to imply that "anyone" can becone a member for $45. When I get a response will post details here.
I remember an american poster saying that the membership requirments we have here were lifted in the US years ago, there anyone can join.

And if you have an relative in America with the same surname and a Costco account there, they can register you there for an American card which you can use here. Plus, you'll be able to order to American address from the Costco online site in America which is excellent, and if there are any problems you can return the item in the UK.0

Continuing on US theme.. you can use your UK card in the States, AND they take AMEX!!!!!!HLK

I've just been into our brand new Costco here in Milton Keynes and I could just about get through the door, let alone the car park.
I've never seen people buy so many bog rolls! Either there's a virulent tummy bug coming up or the thirld world war is on the way!
First impressions not too bad, although the membership queue was a bit of a rugby scrum, chaotic, free-for-all. Did manage to get in after a 30 minute new membership processing delay, which was made worst by unapologetic queue jumpers.
I might be wrong, but the look and feel of the place, along with the clientele lent more towards ALDI & LIDL etc, rather then M&S and Waitrose, but then I suppose that's the whole point.0 -
Must be the Milton Keynes store then because at the Thurrock and Watford ones - my car is (S Reg Civic) looks out of place with all the new Audis, BMWs and Mercedes.

On opening day in Milton-Keynes, getting there at around noon when the non-business customers are allowed in, there were not enough trolleys and it was a race to find paying customers heading toward their car to ask them to transfer rights to the trolley. Parking was even more of a scarmble, and there were bobbies outside just in case. But by 3pm it had cleared (perhaps it was the opening day excitement or MK folks spending their lunch hour at Costco), but the free gift bags for those leaving the store with bought merchandise had run out.
One of the bonus thrills was exiting the car park, to the right you could see the big Tesco Extra store and its huge sign and feel like Milton-Keynes has moved on and Tesco for many becoming a symbol of days gone by.
Costco was having a BOGOF on a case of 20 paper towels, and when we went to enquire to three apparent managers who were evidently checking out customers trolleys, one remarked "I couldn't tell you, I'm from Tesco".
Another bonus at Costco is being able to find American quality clothing, and also you can get prints from digital photos at 5p each while your shopping is done instead of having to wait 24 hours at boots.0 -
Still a scrum-down at 7pm when I went tonight.
Car park was fun - one entrance and exit that I could see - not very well designed (to my dismay!).
When the Bristol store opened in June they had pre-printed voucher books which were distributed to people going in. No sign of that in MK, we only guessed that paper towels were on offer because of the amount of piles of them going through the tills.
Left around 8pm, people still queuing near the door to join up.
To be honest, it looks like any other Costco store. I could've been in Reading, Bristol, Derby, Watford (all of which I've used over the years!). Nothing outstanding in the way of 'bargains' per se, but then I didn't have a voucher book (if one existed...)0
