My boss won't take cold calls, and we have permission to say what we like to them, but I usually try to explain to them that I am not allowed to put them through, please remove us from your database, etc. Why be rude when they are just doing a job? However,sometime you get a real Monkeyboy on the phone...

Monkeyboy: Can I speak to Mr H please?

Me: Who's calling?

Monkeyboy: XX from XYZ

Me: What's it regarding?

Monkeyboy: Cheaper phone calls (or somesuch thing)

Me: Is this a cold call?

Monkeyboy: I'm ringing to discuss cheaper phone calls.

Me: I'm afraid this sounds like a cold call, and he won't take cold calls, so I can't put you through. Sorry.

Monkeyboy: Oh, really (v sarcastic tone)

Me: Pardon?

MB: (still sarky) Oh, he won't take cold calls, oh really?

ME: No, he won't and that attitude will get you nowhere as I'm now terminating this call.

*click*

Colleagues collapse on floor laughing. Boss grinning head off. I LOVE answering the cold calls.
