Ninth Anniversary First Post Combo Breaker
My husband died last year and he always did the insurance. It's something I found very frustrating last year and paid much more than I need have. Have been following MSE since then thanks to my sister telling me about it. At the end of December (why did my husband do everything in December???) by haggling with the insurance companies I saved some money - but remembering Martin's words of wisdom set off and went on the compare sites.
Over and above the original quotes for buildings, contents and car insurances, I saved just under 450 quid!!! I'm gobsmacked - but at least plumper in the pocket.
And could have saved even more - but this is a start and a great reward for time spent searching (I really don't enjoy it). As my school reports used to say 'could do better' and will do next year.
    Thanks Martin!!!

Just one query: there are some companies I've never heard of giving the lowest quotes. I feel nervous going with them. Is there any evidence that making a claim from them is more difficult?
  • The Christmas Holiday Season brings retailers 25% and more of their yearly sales. It's safe to assume the month of January most likely shows the highest consumer credit card balances. As impulse buying often times is the culprit in charging more than we planned, it's easy to see how one could get carried away during the 'season of giving.'

Now it's January and those bills have started coming in. Two or more credit cards with high balances can take a bite out of your budget
  • At the end of year I saved upto £ 1800 on daily needs.
  • Checked my mobile and homephone/broadband after Martin's show last night…and was horrified!
Changed both today, saving me £11 month, and included an upgrade to an i-phone with included 1gb internet access.Result!
    Thanks to Martin

  • I owe about £5300 on interest free credit cards but am also saving - I know debts should be paid off first but do not have any emergency fund or savings/Christmas/birthdays/holiday savings.

So made the decision for the first time in my life (and I am 49) to get right into saving.

I have given up drink since 01/01/14 and now do not miss it - not saying I will not drink again but I am finding the fact I have still a wedge of cash in my bank account 10 days before the next pay day as a huge incentive.

As I have not been out socially since Christmas I have saved a bundle and am reluctant to spend much at all until a week on Friday when I next get paid.

My aim this year initially was to make huge sacrifices and just pay off the debt by Christmas but that would mean another year of real financial pain (just living to pay off debt) - so I made the decision to pay off the debt more gradually but get it down to a manageable level in stages.

However I would have had nothing if the washing machine broke down etc and there is no way I am buying anything again on a credit card. Those days are well and truly over. Have not spent on it since about October 2011 and no overdraft since then either. But I did not save - wish now I had saved a little even £10-30 per month would have been achievable but my mind-set has changed now and I am enjoying it.

I will still make sacrifices and spend by need rather than want - you know what it is like you go through a period of wanting nice things for the house, clothes etc but for now I buy cheap and discount only - the nice things will have to wait another year or so when I do not owe a bean.

    Hope this helps
