  • I looked at where we spend the most. I wondered if we could cut costs without cutting our living. And the great news is yes!!! Firstly we spend a huge amount on our everyday shopping. So I have started shopping in a smaller supermarket that sells a "cheaper" version of the brands we normally use. Although I can't buy everything we need, just by shopping once a week in an alternative supermarket so far have saved £120 in a month. Yes that's £120 in 1 month. The next big expense is utilities. Gas and electric, we were with the same supplier for 5 years on a prepayment meter. After a lot of phone calls and research I found a new supplier, got credit meters put in for FREE, and based on the usage over the past year and going on our new tarrif rates, we will be saving nearly £240 per year. Also with a discount for paying by direct debit that's an extra £80 per year. And £12 per year for managing our account online. So we are on a good start to a money saving future, without living less. Thank you :money::j

I've not long saved more than £2500 on house and contents insurance.

We share the house with a friend: he's been taking care of the insurance until now, but this year I took it over as he's spending a lot less time here. Current insurer wanted £3000, plus £270 for amending the policy - which they did in February!

Now, admittedly the insurance is not on the same terms: it's now in my name not my friend's name (although his interest in the property is noted), and there are fewer people living in the house - he's now a visitor rather than a permanent resident.

But on the minus side, the house used to have someone home most of the time, and it doesn't any more; and we are close to a river although very unlikely to flood; and we have a tall tree close to the house.

I have no clue what the current insurer thought our risks were: I've now got a policy which appears to have more generous cover for £360. Plus the TopCashBack sum which will appear shortly.

Oh, and it's guaranteed for two years, if I can't find anything cheaper next year.

This is the single biggest saving I've made using this site!

I switched from Elephant to LV car insurance this year. My renewal was £680 and found LV to beat that at £475. Even after elephant gave me an updated quote of 540 LV was cheaper. Its always refreshing getting cheaper car insurance. yippee ki yay!
  • Just saved £86.14 on my Home and Contents Ins just by asking if they could improve the original quote that I got cos I thought it was a bit dear.5 mins later girl on phone comes back with a quote of £210 instead of £296.14 which they were originally looking.Just shows you how much profit these Ins companies are really making when they can cut the bill by £86!
  • Thank you for the email about saving £10 off the Family and friend's rail card (renewal online). It is a massive saving I have just made , very much appreciated:T :-)
