    Hello all

I've been going through the potty training senario for a few weeks now. So far my boy (was 3 yrs old in May) is doing great at weeing. He's not had an accident for a few weeks now.

When it comes to the other (No. 2) he just poos in his undies. I've tried all sorts but he still won't use the toilet to do it. He's going to a proper nursery on Wednesday so I don't think they're going to be too happy if he does it there.

Has anyone got any suggestions for what I could try? As I said, peeing has been great, he's even got up during the night with his nappy on and gone to the loo but no amount of talking to him is helping with the other.

I'm afraid I can't advise on sorting out the poo problem itself...mine was the other way, and did those fine but was forever weeing himself! But I just wanted to say that you shouldn't worry about what the nursery will say as they'll have had plenty of 'accidents' to deal with. However I would suggest having a word with them so they're aware, make sure there's changes of clothing for him. I actually found my son was better at his nursery than at home - he seemed to follow the example of other children who went to the toilet nicely, so that may help your son too. You did say you've been doing it jsut a few weeks, so it's early days really
  • Hi Lipstick,

My friend had a similar situation with her son and the only way that worked for her in the end was her sitting him down and telling him that if he wanted to do a number 2 to tell her and she kept nappies to hand. She then put a nappy on and he quite happily done it in his nappy then she progressed it by getting him to tell her when he had to do it and he would sit on the potty with a nappy on and do it and then over a couple of weeks he went to do a pee he just naturally done a no2 as he seemed comfortable sitting on the potty to do a no 2 and he was fine from that on. Or if you didn't want to resort to the nappy route you could try something like a reward scheme for example if he really likes stickers a certain character say buy a few sets and giver him one sticker for a number one and two for a number two and that may help, and then if that worked maybe a reward chart with the promise of a small toy at the end of a week to keep him motivated. I have also heard of someone using the 'poo fairy' and they kept a little tin high up with treats in it (raisins, little sweets etc) and when a poo was done the tin would magically open to allow you to get a treat probably better for girls though. Each child is different and potty training has to be gradual it's such a big thing for them so try and make it as fun as possible. You also mentioned nursery my youngest son was potty trained a few months ago and was still in the process of training when he joined his nursery. I was a bit worried that it would total knock him back but they were brilliant with him as a lot of the other children in his room were still training so it really helped him along to see his friends going to the toilet or potty. So they should be happy enough to work with you to get your son trained. My son has no problem at all now and is fully trained and ready to go to playgroup in a couple of weeks and I really didn't think he would be. I hope you can find a solution that works for you and your son but keep at it and it will happen. Hope this helps.

It might not make sense right now but everything happens for a reason and down the line you always see why ;)
  • My dd2 is a exactly the same. We have been potty training since mid july, and although the wee's are pretty much sorted she almost always poos in her knickers (although to be fair she has done a few on the toilet lately)! I think its quite common, dd1 did it and so did my niece, but it is driving me crazy now... yesterday she did it in the car and it went all over her car seat! I try not to get cross, but I dont really know how to solve it either, with dd1 i just waited until she got it but i don't think it went on this long.

    hi all

Ty for taking the time to reply. My little one went to nursery and I told them about the situation. They seemed ok with it, so he's not going to get chucked out I hope lol.

I'll have to get a reward chart I think, and give that a go. When I say to him he'll have to go in nappies if he carries on pooing in his pants, he seems rather pleased lol.

Hopefully as has been said, he'll pick it up from the other kids, and get there sooner rather than later.

    Ty again :)

    Hi

I have the same problem with my son. This is the 4th week. He started nursery last week and he wears nappies at night and he still wont poo in the toilet or potty even though I am now bribing him with sweets for doing it on the potty/toilet!!! :(

I have been watching him, if he starts acting funny and pulling at his bum i sit him on the potty and he will usually poo (I have caught him just in time a few times) although he did still poo in his pants today!!! I was in kitchen making tea and didnt see him.

Good luck with the reward chart. I hope it works for you.

Bribery worked (eventually) with my son. We had a supply of small sweets (smarties, minstrels etc), and he got one for each successful use of the toilet (after a good hand-washing, of course). I seem to remember it taking a while though. And now I've got to go through it all again with my daughter...
  • I had this with my daughter we toilet trained at 2.5years. She loves being outside and even more so on her trampoline. Everyday she did a poo in her pants she didn't get on the trampoline the rest of the day. She got the message within the week. Why not try stopping him from playing with his fave toy. I know others might not agree with this method but what works for one doesn't work for all!!

  • this is very common, my DS did the same too.
the nurserys are used to it, so I wouldn't worry about that.
My son got the hang of it eventually after not liking the feeling of it in his pants. It did take quite a few weeks though.
we just kept trying to encourage him to go in the toilet, and praising when he did, also with the use of a sticker chart.
  • DD is 3 - we started potty training her young and she had it! was excellent - then, one day she had an accident - My nan very stupidly said "thats naughty" (meaning to have an accident and not go to toilet) but DD took it as "its naughty to pee/poo AT ALL" so she kept holding everything in, sitting on toilet when she was about to burst and scream whilst doing so.

After a while she settled - back to normal - telling us she needed toilet and no accidents

DD went to visit ex MIL the weekend before last, and had an accident. Ex MIL said "its ok to have accidents" - DD has misinterputted and now thinks its ok to not go to toilet and to instead - have accidents.

Rang HV and was told "you and ex breaking up has emotionally damaged DD and thats why shes doing it" now me and ex broke up almost a year ago - I think DD has just become confused
She now has at least 1 accident every day. She told us "its ok" so we said it wasnt. She didnt understand so we tried "not clean/what babies do" (obviously we state it correct so its not "having a go") and she says "it's for babies to pee in their knickers isnt it mummy - i'll go to toilet next time" but she never does

She has her own "toilet" (fisherprice potty toilet) and loves it and she also goes on the big toilet (only occasionally, she still thinks its scary!)

    Any help?
