SONY don't warranty their LCD TV cabinets!

Options
If anyone looking to buy a new LCD TV I would avoid this model SONY KDL-32S3000.

Bought one from Dixons on-line just over a month ago and have now noticed an uneven gap between the screen and bottom edge of cabinet. It seems the cabinet is warped or the screen has not been correctly fitted. Sony have advised that "they don't warrant cabinets" and therefore will not be taking any action on repair or replacement.

I bought this falsely thinking that buying a well known brand would give me piece of mind.....Should have bought the Hannspree for much less cost:mad:

Warranties are merely extras that manufacturers choose to give to their products and don't replace your existing consumer rights. So just use your consumer rights and get it repaired or replaced, your contract isn't with Sony, it's with Dixons and it's their responsibility to repair and replace faulty products not Sony's.

Give your local Trading Standards a call (in your local phonebook). They will confirm what superscraper has posted and explain your rights under the Sale of Goods Act. You will need to deal with Dixons for this.

TS can explain what you need to do.

Yep. As superscraper as mentioned reject the TV under Distance Selling Regs with Dixons. Then go and buy a Samsung. Samsung make a lot of products for Sony and are far cheaper. Most Sony TVs have Samsung LCD panels anyway.

Dixons dont want to know as I reported it 35 days after receiving the TV. Seems anything outside 28 days with Dixons is out of gaurantee as far as they are concerned.

I just feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall. Because there is not actually a 'fault' with the set and it is a cosmetic problem Both Sony and Dixons say it is each others problem.

They both make me feel that I am being 'padantic'. Looks like I'll have to live with it but certainly won't deal with Dixons again or ever buy a Sony product:mad:

This is nothing to do with Distance Selling Regs (it's too late to reject it now anyway, even under this law). It is to do with the Sale of Goods Act.

Looking thru the Consumer Rant forum it is quite worrying how many 'well known' and what we all falsely believe 'reliable' retailers offer such poor service. The sale of goods act seems of little use to most us.

I suppose this is a sign of the times where we all seem to be tempted by price rather than service.

Problem being now 'Who Can You Trust'

Your contract is with Dixons, not Sony. This means that it is up to Dixons to sort it out

Dixons are talking porkies. You have the right to reject it under the Sale of Goods Act as it is not of satisfactory quality within the meaning of section 14(2) or (possibly) fit for purpose (section 14(4)). You are entitled to a refund, replacement or repair (your choice). Be clear that you are rejecting the goods.

If you paid on credit card, get your card issuer on the hook by means of section 75 Consumer Credit Act. They are jointly liable with Dixons which means you have the same rights against them as you would against Dixons.

Thing is, when you pay a lot of money for a 'good make' TV. You don't only expect it to work, you also expect it to look good. If there is a fault with the cabinet, even though Sony only regard this as cosmetic. I would look to complain as the TV is 'not fit for purpose' (ie, the finish isn't up to standard)

Trading Standards can really help you out here by explaining your exact rights and advising you on what to do next (including helping you with the wording of any letter you need to send)
