No idea, d-g. Sorry. I always use my friendly and very helpful local garage man.

But bear with me and I'll do some research, if I can. Do you have any more details? Engine size, year of manufacture?

I was wondering if there was a big supermarket with one of those quik-fit type of places next to it. Will ask for that a reception in the morning. I cannot remember the chain name so cannot google it

Have checked a couple of sites. Euromaster and Midas. No prices available online. Midas are currently offering 20% off rear silencers and catalytic converters.

    More to come.

Yes, big branches of Leclerc have a "Auto" section adjacent sometimes.

Norauto have a price list for fitting, but not for parts. 23€ for rear silencer only; 46€ for full exhaust system; 65€ for full exhaust plus catalytic converter, etc.

Do you have any preference for a particular make of exhaust?

Do you have a SatNav? If so, I can give you addresses to enter.

The nearest Leclerc Auto centre is just south of Orl!ans at Olivet.

If your exhaust has gone in the middle of the pipe itself (as opposed to where the pipe goes into a box/silencer), you may be able to do an extremely effective repair yourselves.

For this you need a tin - as in baked bean tin. Empty contents, remove paper label. Remove both ends completely, leaving just a cylinder. Now cut the cylinder from top to bottom, in as straight a line as you can, though it's not too vital.

Buy two clamps of the appropriate size from your nearest exhaust place. Slip the clamps onto the pipes, one each side of the break. Hold the ends of the pipes together and wrap the tin can around the break, so that about 2-3 inches of can is either side of the break. You are effectively making a new section of pipe. Slide the clamps over the ends of the can and tighten.

I did this once and the repair lasted 6000 miles!

Now this may seem strange advice. But if the exhaust dealers have to order your part from their suppliers, your journey may be delayed by a day, and this dodge will get you going quickly - and you could always suggest it to them as a temporary repair.

If you need any vocab, just shout, but do it quickly. I have to be up very early tomorrow to take rellies back to the airport.

  • Hi Droopsnout, well done that man!

We had a baked bean tin exhaust for three years, we only got rid of it when we had to change the exhaust for other reasons!
