Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • Thanks seven-day-weekend - it is a bit of a skater holiday for me - yes. Having said that I was torn between two weeks in Althea but I would love to see Galicia just once. I'd heard about the rain (how else would it be so green) What really tempts me is the fish festival. I adore all things shellfish, nothing like it here that I know of and where I live the only fish counter is in Tesco - need I say more! Thanks for the history of the place - should be a great adventure.

Getting there was proving an exhausting exercise and since my trips last year the thought of going anywhere near Gatwick or Heathrow fills me with dread. Did a National Express trip for the first time last year and I loved it. Hope my mother doesnt scupper my plans, she is very fragile. More soon, janet

  • seven-day-weekend I forgot. I was going to put this on the ski-ing and skating site, but it looks like its been abandoned - is everybody out there doing just that?

You seem to be the font of all knowledge? Do you or anybody out there know if its true that in Cyprus a person's pensions are tax free? It would certainly explain the explosion of Ex-Pats there.

  • I 'm not the fount of all knowledge!

I know quite a lot about things I'm interested in but not a lot about anything else.

I don't know about pensions in Cyprus, I too have heard that they are tax-free, but I'm sure you'll find out by following the link below and asking on the Cyprus Forum.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Merrywidow, I've bumped up the ski-ing and ska-ting forum - a shame to let it go to waste!

  • See I told you that you know a lot - this is what is brilliant about this thread and many others, sharing what we know with those who dont. Brilliant. Case in point was a thread with a woman who was asking about her pension which was only 4 years off and she knew A1 Zilch - has she had her head in a bucket or what - she got a bit frosty when someone (?) pointed out a thing or two - brilliant.

  • we are both retired and looking at spain for the winter breaks {rentals to start with} but has we both have disabilities would like to try a retirement complex were there would be some help if we required it.
not having been to mainland spain before we are not sure on the location but because its going to be winter rentals we appreciate that we need to be selective, i have seen plenty of agents offering properties for sale on sites for retired persons, but not offering long term rentals and would welcome any advice from anyone who has gone down this avenue themselves or have freinds that have.

    many thanks great thread
  • Hello Gerry, welcome to the thread.

I don't have experience with this at all but hopefully someone else will know something!

Sorry Gerry - I have not heard of such things near us on the main ex-pat belt around Torreveija. To be honest, average age must be at the youngest 60. We are "young things" in our late 50's. So what I am saying is that nearly everyone is retired, though there are a few younger ones creeping in. This is even more so in the winter, when many folk take long term rentals from retirees. The one tip I will tell you though is it can get cold at night, make sure you rent a place with some form of heating. The majority around us are either English or speak English, and a brand new hospital within 10 mins. which I understand has been rated as on of the top 10 in the world. What are your ages and health conditions (general not detailed).
Whether there is something in the Marbella area I would not know.
    Regards

  • thx both for promt replys, we are both 66 and only have minor disabilities but they limit our walking capabilitys and we would prefere not to have to rent a car to get around so we thaught being on some sort of complex with shops restruants doctors ect within a short walking distance would be an ideal solution.
we may well go over in the winter months this year to stay in a freinds property in moraira to see how the climate suits us for a start but any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
