Well the sun shone today.....managed to get 3 lots of washing done and dried. We had the postposned chlorestestol fiesta at 1,30 this afternoon and have just got home now!!!...shattered. Let´s hope tomorrow is dry as well

  • We have had a sunny day too. Thank goodness! There has been a lot of damage done by the water; in the next village a house has been washed away. I don't think anyone was hurt.

Landslides all over the place and at least one road is impassable. This deserty land is not made to take water of rainforest proportions.

Our Fiesta starts tomorrow, in honour of our Patron, the Blessed Child. It goes on until January 5th.

We have just had the Fiesta magazine delivered. Not only has it got a picture of the village taken by my husband on the front, but our neighbours have been chosen to be the 'Reyes de la Tercera Edad' (Kings of the Third Age) and there is a large picture of them in it as well. There is also a Juvenile King and Queen, and of course the main Queen of the Fiesta, and her Ladies, who are all teenage girls of the village.

It is a great honour to be invited to any of these positions so we are really pleased for our neighbours Luis and Amalia. Also we are proud that my husband was asked to provide photographs of the village (he has another one inside the magazine)

The highlight (for us anyway) of the Fiesta is on January 2nd when the statue of El Niño Bendito (The Blessed Child) is carried around the village, high on his dais, surounded by flowers. He comes out of the church, along with the Virgen, is carried high around the village, followed by a brass band and villagers carrying candles. He returns eventually to the church, where he is held aloft outside and there is a HUGE firework display and then joyful cheering and dancing, before he goes back in again.

It is a big event for this village and we are really looking forward to it.

Fireworks for the next six days then.........

SDW yes indeed an honour, one that I had in the village of Antas when I was invited to help carry the 'Virgen De La Cabeza' at our fiesta a few years back,
    enjoy

  • Oh! WHAT an honour to carry the Virgen! I don't think we will ever be invited to do that as our villagers know we are 'Protestantes' (although we do attend the village church). But my husband is known as the photographer and picture framer!

    Enjoy, we certainly will.

    Happy new year all.
May 2010 bring us all peace, health and happiness.

Just to update my running figures on the pounds progress against the euro.

    Pound vs Euro
Annual low, high and average over time (Interbank rate)
    From oanda.com/currency

    Year LOW HIGH AVERAGE
    1999 1.386 1.613 1.519
    2000 1.557 1.758 1.643
    2001 1.547 1.679 1.609
    2002 1.526 1.647 1.592 coins & notes introduced 1/1/2002
    2003 1.378 1.546 1.446
    2004 1.406 1.528 1.475
    2005 1.409 1.512 1.463
    2006 1.424 1.499 1.467
    2007 1.353 1.530 1.462
    2008 1.019 1.366 1.259
    2009 1.021 1.190 1.123

After the average holding steady over 2003 to 2007 the last two years has seen a significant drop in value against the pound.
In fact against the average of 2007 against the 2009 average is 23% less.
Against 2002 when coins and notes were introduced the average is down more than 30%
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

Happy New Year to you all too

Looks like we are starting 2010 just above the average for 2009, let's hope for a little reversal in the trend this year and get it closer to the high of 2008

A little belated, but season's greetings and a wish for love, peace and happiness to be yours in 2010.
