Well, it turns out to be a little less obtrusive than I thought it was going to be, but it's totally pointless. I would have expected to be consulted about something like that. But it has been put there to prevent one loonie riding his motorbike too fast. As if!

What that means is that the Maire is covering his back in case some kiddie is run over.

I just wish they had decided to discuss it with us. We could have talked about other traffic calming measures that would be more attractive.

I confess I let the Maire have both barrels on Tuesday. I actually was cross. Doesn't happen often. Will have to make my peace with him, I guess!

OUR Mayor waved at us this morning......:p

  • Well, are we going to hear about your street sign then?

    Whoops, sorry, missed that!

Our little lane has had a new name (it has been named after Gerald Brenan) but the street sign says Brenam... oh well, that's rural Andlalucia for you. We have all had new numbers and, if your road name has changed, a new street sign; they are very nice blue and white ceramic.

My friend is most annoyed as she lives in the middle of Calle Real (the high street) - each end of C/Real has had a new sign, but the sign in the middle where she is is still battered metal.

The only regular wheeled traffic our lane has is our car; however it has plenty of other traffic in the way of walkers and mules.

  • For all of you tucked up in warmer climes, my little house is sat in a winter wonderland today with about 10 inches of snow, and more is forecast for tonight. My fridge and freezers are well stocked so I am hibernating till its all gone. Droopsnout - the snow is well settled in Holland with parts 40 c'meters deep. Moving over from here to Belgium in the coming days - get your snow chains out!!

    Gulp!

We will just have to have faith in our Belgian friends to keep the motorways clear. Will keep in touch with our rellies there and take their advice.

Travel at this time of year is always a gamble.

Forecast at the mo for our travelling days is rain all the way on Tuesday, and ... Wednesday as well. Yuk.

Anyway, you just keep yourself warm and safe, MW.

How you doing MW? Still freezing here, we have had very little snow, less than half an inch, but that is not unusual for us to get off light of snow. Road and pavements are icy, but we have stayed in so far, but hope to get out to the shops tomorrow.

Hope everyone is safe and well, and have a lovely Xmas, ours will be quiet on Xmas Day as DS is with his GF at her Mum's for Xmas Lunch and they will make their way north for or on Boxing Day, weather permitting, and manic later, and we have the wedding of our godson on the 29th. Back to Spain mid-Jan.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • We will probably spend Christmas Day on our own (may take a picnic to La Ragua if there is snow up there ) but then it is our village Fiesta from the 2-4 January (our Patron is El Niño Bendito - the Blessed Child) and then on 27th of January I am having my own Fiesta for my 60th birthday.

Who says it just has to be cold and dark in January??

    And to you too MW.

I don't know how many of you have read my Facebook entry today.

We have had torrential rain here for four days and our roof terrace is leaking into the living room, like it did last year when the snow melted.

All our friends are in a similar position. These old village houses were not built to cope with huge amounts of water pouring from the sky.

We have all fixed it the Spanish way....stick a bucket under it (except in our case it's a bucket, a mop bucket, a cool box, half a dozen towels and three large plastic boxes), mix a g&t, light the fire (once you have emptied the water out of the woodburner), say 'mañana' and have a siesta.

Some friends of ours though who have a little farm have lost half their land in a huge landslide.....the water has turned into a river, rushed down the mountain onto their land and literally washed it all away. Many of their trees and prickly pears ended up on the main road and the Council have come with a bulldozer and cleared it away....there is mud, rocks and 'chumba' (cacti) over the road in many places.

It's times like this I am glad we have no land and that the land behind our house, although on a mountain, happens to be a flat bit!

Several of us frome the village have been with our friends all day, trying to keep channels open to divert the flash rivers into a safer route. It's a very worrying time.

It has stopped raining for a while - but more forecast tomorrow until Sunday.
