  • I do a boilwash in an empty machine with vinegar (half bottle) and a little sqirt of bleach, I also put toiletpaper soaked/sprayed in bleach on mouldy rubber ring, take and wash out the drawer and clean outer part of drawer housing with an old toothbrush

I take the drawer out periodically & soak in hot water & bleach before scrubbing it & the space for it with the bleach solution, & also do the 60 degrees for towels, sheets & white school shirts.

The mould spores are in the rest of your washing machine as well.

Take the soap drawer out and have a look!

The only way to get rid of them is to regularly do a hot wash (60C) otherwise you won't kill them off.

You should was your bedding in a hot wash anyway (unless it is nasty polyester stuff!)

  • Hi,

Just bought a second hand washing machine which has a bit of a manky seal! Just looked up on web and found that turpentine is supposed to remove it, so will try and see if this works and let you know. You've got use a rag or cloth that you don't want to re-use.
  • Thanks for all the posts, tried them all. Scourer, Jif, Bleach, cream of tartar, eucalyptus oil, etc, etc

    However, only 2 things worked.

Fine wire wool plus extra strong mould remover, which you can get from Wilkinsons or a hardware shop ( not Dettox, not strong enough). It took 45 minutes of scrubbing just to remove one patch of black mould, about the size of a 20p coin.

I was trying to find the original post, which suggested the wire wool, to attribute the thanks to, but can't find it.

I shouldn't forget the 3rd factor. Husband who did all the hard work.

    Happy Cleaning!

They say that bleach rots the rubber, but a one-off shouldn't hurt. Just put very thick bleach on it overnight and it will go, and then do a boiling wash with loads of bleach because the mould will be elsewhere in the machine too. :)

And leave the door open between washes in future, this is when it gets mouldy when it's left damp and warm and shut in:o

Both very good response, just the same as I would have said.
