Wife and I applied for Barclays RS today but have missed reading the posts in here and we're in a hurry due working in the afternoon hence we've missed some important details.

The whole application was not very pleasant as the bloke who handled the our application was probably not very helpful to say the least. Anyway, to sum it up we managed to open one of each and was given jus a plain A4 paper with the sort code and account number. We had the mistake of not asking how we could monitor our accounts as we are not existing barclays customer. It is not a passbook account so if you don't have online access they'll send you a statement quarterly. I've only knew when we went home as I've rang the branch to inquire so we need to go back and open a basic account with them so that we could have access our RS.

I knew that Abbey had received quite a lot of negative feedback from some of their customers but we have appplied and opened their monthly RS and the staff in our local branch has been very pleasant and didn't even sell some other products unlike barclay staff that we've encountered was very poor in customer service.

Thanks for the details. To be fair, it's nice to be able to monitor the account online but as this is a regular saver (and you can control the inward flow of cash from your "other" bank, whatever that might be) it's probably not a big issue - it just means you have to visit the branch or phone them when you want to take money out. Having one less set of account details to remember will also make a nice change! Think I'll take a look next week.
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...

We went back to Barclays and prepared to open a barclays bank account (no fee current account) but we were surprised that the same bloke who handled our application yesterday said he put some details in his computer and then told us that we'll received information in the post in the next few days without asking us to open a current account. I was not convinced that he was right as he was in hurry and trying to shove us out in his room even we still have questions to ask:mad:. We will wait for the information in the post and if we have to come back in branch and speak to their branch manager so be it. Sometimes it's not worth the hassle opening some of these headline grabbing savings accounts if as a customer your treated unfairly.
  • I experienced the same problem when applying to open sole account with ICICI. I sent off a cheque from our joint account for minimum amount to open an account. Cheque was rejected/returned because it had my OH's name on it as well as mine. When I phoned ICICI they said the cheque for the opening amount had to come from me as a single account holder. The whole idea of opening an account with ICICI in the first place.....was to open a single account!

just wondered if any existing customers who have a joint current account have managed to open an account online in their sole name?

my current account is shared with my OH in joint names but the T&C's for opening online say it has to be a sole name account.

just wondering if its another case of T&C's saying one thing and being able to do another?

    thank you.

Has anyone who opened this account without online access last June been sent a statement yet?

I've just received this reply from barclays to my email query.

Available to new and existing Personal and Premier customers, aged 16 years or over who are resident in the UK for tax purposes

Limited to one account per customer. Account may be held in sole or joint names

No requirement to hold a current account or other product with Barclays

Maximum monthly standing order deposit: #250.
Maximum balance #3,000: (12 monthly payments of #250)

Nothing here..the advisor just gave me the sort code and account number on the phone, cause she couldn't open the account when I was there after asking questions, filling forms for almost an hour. But afterwards, nothing arrived, no welcome letter, no single paper. I did went to the branch to check the account. The casher told me that the account was in my name. I will go down to the branch to check again when I have time now you mentioned.

I visited my local branch today. Apparantly, my account was set up to receive yearly statements by default. She has now changed it to monthly so hopefully, I should start receiving statements from November onwards.
