Thanks for the tip. I've also got a strawberry pot that my brother bought me for my birthday last year and have put some herbs in it - how do you stop the slugs eating it all? I don't really want to put the blue pellets down as I'm worried my daughter will pop them in her mouth - everything goes in the mouth at the moment.

    Hi Jedi,
i`ve started doing this after reading it on one of the other boards.

Chop a bulb of garlic and boil in about a pint and a half of water, let it cool & strain it and keep it in the fridge or freeze some. Dilute into a spray bottle i use a third of a bottle to two thirds water and spray your strawbs with it, i do mine after tea before dark.

Just popped on to update my signature, don't have time to catch up with all posts as my computer has died and I am borrowing DS laptop.

Hope all goes well with your visit to your sister Mrs M. I am sure seeing you will perk her up.

Many thanks to Angelnikki for stepping in whilst you are away.

I have had a couple of small spends this week, bananas and strawberries from the local market, and household stuff from Wilco. Am still well in budget and to be honest if I wasn't going away on holiday this weekend I would declare now as I wonuldn't need to buy anything before payday on Monday. However as we are going on holiday next week, I am off to Asda tomorrow to buy some goodies to take with us, already have a boxful of basic stuff. Also have to buy a load of noodles, savoury rice etc to leave for DS to eat while we are away.

Think I will keep my budget at £200 for next month as I am going away for a week again at the end of July and although self-catering again, holiday food always seems more expensive - extra treats and alcohol bump it up I think.

try a ring of salt around the pot to stop the slugs getting at it,pretty vile but they dissolve when in contact with salt, yuk

Just like to say a big thank you for the warm welcome and the tips on trying to cook!

As I'm not a great cook I do look things up in recipe books but I never have any of the essential ingredients and they cost a small fortune to buy. What have other people done? How do you know which items are essentials and every household should have? To do this challenge I need to make sure I'm not over my head with the cooking - needs to be cheap, nutritious and suitable for a 18 month old baby.

Am looking forward to it though. Although it's not July yet I did have my first no spend day today! :j

    Hi Jediteacher
Glad you are finding this thread helpful. If you want some really good advice on cooking, what to have in your cupboards, etc. you're in the right place.

For some extra advice, there was a mention on last months challenge about a great book with a massive long name. Here is the link: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=10742305&highlight=how+to+feed+your+whole+family+a+healthy+balanced+diet#post10742305

It really is a fantastic book. I got it out last month from the library and have kept it for another month, but think I am going to try to get a copy from Amazon instead as it's got so much good stuff in it, it's worth keeping (might pass it down to my daughter when she gets her own place!)

    Hope you find it useful,
    Denise

Wow, you guys are really fantastic on here. :A Loads of excellent advice. I'll have to see if they have the book in my local library and see if I can make some sense of the recipes. Blimey it really does have a long title!!!!

    Thank you.
