Scottish Power - VERY Angry!!!

I've been with SP for four years, the first two years were very good. Since then, my monthly payments have varied from 66 per month to 110 per month. Generally I have been happy with them up until recently - for obvious reasons.
I'm in contact with SP via email at the moment and the last email I got from them to day was constructive and I have acted upon it and gone thru all my paperwork. It would seem I can get a better deal elsewhere - apparently, they were doing a good capped deal, and I missed it due to faffing about over this problem. Guess I've been on just a standard deal with them recently, my fault for not keeping an eye on things and shopping around until now when I am forced to change.
I don't think that the rates as posted earlier, are particularly good.Genie

Dear Miss ,
Thank you for your email regarding your account and direct debit. As previously explained, the refund of £551.74 was sent out in error due to a system fault. The bill showing the refund indicated that the readings used were as at January 2008. Following your telephone call giving us up to date readings a revised bill was sent to you on 25 March 2008. This showed an outstanding debt of £860.80 following the sending of the refund.
Based on the revised bill, your current usage is running at £108.00 per month. The current outstanding debt is £565.80. To cover usage and repay the current debt over 12 months would mean a direct debit of £147.00.
I apologise once again for the problem that you have encountered, and if you can give me a number when I can contact you during the day, then I will call you to discuss the matter further. Alternatively, you can contact me via my managers direct line of 01925 ......... My working hours are 8am to 2 pm Monday to Friday.
Yours sincerely
Customer Care Representative
Edit: Please see earlier post with my usage readings as requested! I've gotta go to bed now
only so much research my brain can take...Genie

That's a far more constructive e-mail from them. And it sounds like they are offering to go a bit further in discussing it - a direct line is very helpful.
I would still ask them to waive some of the refund given that they admit it was due to their system error. And they are already offering to let you clear the debt over 12 months, which is the best I would have hoped for (apart from letting you off some of it).
You can't switch suppliers whilst you owe them lots of money, though, so I would settle down and stay with them, only considering whether it's worth taking their capped deal rather than the deal you are currently on.
I don't believe that any of the capped deals you think will save you money will *actually* save you money. There's no way you will pay £800 odd capped instead of over £1200 uncapped. The two are not based on the same levels of consumption.0 -
Thank you Markymark - I'm not good at figures (you may have noticed), I am quite surprised that the credit/debt of £551 was from the gas side of things as we don't use that much. Seems alot for - what, two and a half months?
But then, nothing should surprise me any moreGenie

And yes, it was a much nicer email markymark - forgot about that bit. But the guy works 8-2 Mon to Fri... I work 8-6 Mon to Fri. Can't do the personal phone call thingy when at work - not on.
Also re the switch thing, I wondered that if I could get a better deal, then i could get a loan to pay off the debt (debt, I don't DO debt!!) that I owe SP and then switch.
You know, that is what really really upsets me more than anything, is the debt word. I work so hard, and pay my bills etc - I'm gutted that I now have this 'debt'. I can't relax til this is sorted.Genie

But you won't get a "much cheaper deal". SP are not a particularly expensive supplier; capped rate deals always cost more than standard priced deals. It definitely isn't worth borrowing money - and paying interest - to change supplier.
Please set out the SP and alternative supplier prices per kWh (and standing charge, if appropriate) and your estimated usage in kWh on here before you rashly switch suppliers!0 -
I did notice that quite a few didn't have standing charges and I do pay one at the moment...
I hoped to do more research today, but after being up to gone 2am this morning and catching up on chores etc today, I'm really tired and can't summon up the energy tonight!
I'm not capped with SP so my charges could go sky high.........Genie
