It's nice to be thanked in forums, but to expect or presume it is a hiding to nothing ... and unfair in my opinion. In "the real world" it's distinctly rude to not thank someone who deserves it, but the forum thanks button just doesn't seem the same to me somehow ~ not sure why. I think it's just too easy to lose track of every single person to thank. I never feel lack of thanks in these forums as being thankless. And in any case, what's the point of getting het up over it?

Yes, if you look closely you'll see that I started a new thread and thanked the posters in that thread.
Then I was asked why I hadn't thanked someone in another thread.
When I explained that I hadn't looked at the other thread (yet) it was then deemed that that was illogical and as someone with a lot of posts why wouldn't I look at my previous thread etc.

Yes, leaving thanks is polite, but abusing someone because they haven't thanked you is generally considered impolite.

Yes I do agree with you, but it's all too easy to overlook thanking someone occasionally. And if I think someone really could/should have thanked me but couldn't be bothered ... I'd rather move on and not give them the satisfaction of knowing it bothered me. In a forum, where you've no face to face way of telling if someone just got it a bit wrong Vs was rude, this strategy to me seems the most decent. Especially as I'm sure that in most cases it's not rudeness. If it got to be too big an issue I'd vote to do away with the thanks buttons, rather than get too petty about it.

Just to reiterate - I do agree with you, it is good manners, but somehow to me in a forum it doesn't feel too much like bad manners if someone doesn't hit the thanks button.

I've noticed one or two folk along the way whose siggies explicitly solicit thanks button presses if they've helped you ~ to me that's a bit shallow.

Just thanked you for this 'cos I think what you say needs saying. But it's a bit sad I found myself having to think twice if I should hit the button or not
