Here's the hot water cylinder that I want to put back into my flat.
I've cleaned it out with vinegar and it's pretty good now.
However, I'd like to know that this piece of pipe in the middle of the feeder tank is supposed to do:

When I flushed out the tank another piece of plastic pipe fell out:

I am thinking that a sacrificial anode would have been pushed into these plastic tubes..
One in the top tank......
And one inside the Hot Water Cylinder itself0 -
It most probably held a coil of zinc, magnesium or aluminium wire about 6 or 8mm dia which was supposed to act as a sacrificial anode to help reduce corrosion to the heating element by electrolytic reaction, it’s now long gone, but the tank should work fine without it.0

Thanks, all agrees with what I was told on the Screwfix forum.
Sacrificial anode.
I've read up on it on google and the articles say that over the first few months the copper builds up a protective layer, so this is no longer needed.Happy chappy0 -

Good morning: My OH identified the sacrificial anode on your previous HWC/fortic thread but no thanks for him

You asked a question on your own thread to which my OH responded:I wrongly assumed you would read and acknowledge responses as you appear to be a high frequency posterLesson learned and another one for the 'I' list.

How can I acknowledge a response when I have not even read it?
I've explained why, that doesn't mean I won't ever be reading it.
I'll just point out that there is no requirement for thanks to be given for any help on this forum. Maybe I should go round looking for places where I've given advice and not received thanks (I do occasionally notice) and inform those responsible that they'll be on my I list!Happy chappy0 -

Why don't you put us all on the 'I' list? No thanks required.

Why would you start a new thread with out looking at the previous thread on the same subject ?
Goodbye

I started a new thread because it would be shorter with a clearer title.
It might not appear totally logical to you, but that's what happened. I didn't check the original thread. Reading of threads is rather random, I found the answer on this thread and screwfix and didn't read the other one.Happy chappy0
