People think we are loaded too as we have a house in what some people call the posh area, and my husband has a decent paid job.
I also work and do ebay and avon, but still get skint.
I've had people say to me that we must be loaded, if only they knew.
Good thread by the way0 -

Yes, I NEED a break from work but there's loads to do round here and it'd be fun to spend time with DS without the pressures of school and work. I asked a holiday obsessed friend how many she'd been on as a kid (relatively well off parents) and she said the same as me - a few abroad but mainly uk camping. But then she said I sounded like her gran... I'll get my coat...
OTOH I'm backing the toilet roll guy. I try to buy one particular brand as it's thicker and you don't need to use as much. It's more expensive than bog-standard (sorry!) brands but by using less it works out about the same price and it's much softer.0 -
I agree with the "holiday" people - it seems to be completely alien to my work colleagues that Mr P and I might be able to enjoy spending time together in our own home (or even our own country!). The whole point for me is that we are not dashing off to work every morning and we get to spend time together - "a change is as good as a rest", as they say!
In the last 12 months, work colleagues have been on holiday to the Maldives, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Australia/NZ and a rather expensive cruise to New York aboard the Queen Mary! I have been "excused" joining in these activities because I was not well in the last year and not able to venture far from home, but they seem to think that this was the reason we have not had a "big" holiday. In fact, we only have holidays we pay for in full in advance - in the past, this has included fancy, far-flung locations (and we very much enjoyed them!) but there is no way we would be planning anything exotic at the moment...funds dictate that we cut our holiday cloth slightly more frugally than in past years, and there's no way either of us would want to get into debt for the sake of 14 days of warm weather somewhere "exotic"!!!
We have annual membership to the National Trust, and are happy spending time together doing "free stuff"...we don't need to fly thousands of miles away to enjoy being together!
This year's holidays are definitely going to be spent in the UK, and most likely within a stone's throw of home - but it won't stop us from enjoying ourselves!

Quite right too. We have lots of close family in far flung places and have decided that every other year (IF we save for it and can pay in full!) We will have a big holiday to see family. The other year will be camping in the UK or a cheap last minute deal somewhere in Europe.
A friend said to me last week how I must feel bad because she was moaning about not going on holiday for ages when i'd not been away for 3 years! She went to NZ recently. I then pointed out that she lives at home, doesn't have any bills or debts therefore our priorities are slightly different! Then she shut up! The 'poor me' thing really annoyed me tho...I'm quite happy thank you!2022 Comp total (prizes + free spins): £494.81 #20 £12 a day Jan: £382.95/£372 #57 360 1p challenge: £17.70 £10 a day Feb: £571.09/£280 March: £311.96/£3100 -
love this thread, the collections for people at work thing is something which gets me too, and then meals to go with leavings/big birthdays too, at least where I work now it's pretty flexible whether you contribute or not - where I worked before the boss was in hospital and her PA came round and demanded a set amount of money from us all - and I was a temp on the lowest grade - and I had to sit there counting out 10ps out my purse. Even if I had the money to put into all the collections it doesn't mean I would want to contribute to everyone, especially those I don't really know!Initial Mortgage January 2024 - £160,000

Oh dear
I seem to be guilty of rather a lot of these.
My biggest irritation is 'designer'. When I heard that someone had paid £170 + for a handbag I nearly fainted. I think that would cover all the handbags I have ever bought in my life. I believe that sometimes it is better to buy quality, pay once and get the wear out of it (if you can afford it!) but this was a gimmicky thing really only suited for summer!
All this 'label' thing - nike trainers or burberry bags - why spend the money? Most of the time the label is not an indicator of quality but fashion. I once saw a magazine article about how to get the best out of a skirt that cost £600! By the time you had worn it the number of times/ways suggested any sane person would be seriously sick of the damn thing - and don't tell me it would be as pretty after forty washes as it did at the beginning.
Oh dear - rather a rant, sorryAnkh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0
