SUPERMARKET VALUE PRODUCTS.......BEST BUYS???

I read somewhere that Sainsbury's own label tomato sauce is the best both for taste and for it's anti cancer properties.0

Hi everyone, I hope you find this interesting
I work for a large meat processing company, and we produce for ALL the major supermarkets.
IMO the "value" range of the supermarket's are always better value.
I'll give you one example:
Marks and Spencers gammon joints have to be within a specific weight range - anything above or below gets "rejected". These smaller/larger joints then are labelled and packed for Kwik Save's value range.
So the customer can buy a joint for £4.99 from M&S or they can buy one (that might weigh 50grams lighter) from Kwik Save for about £2.
You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work that one out!!
This happens across the whole food industry - we all have to work to a specification and if a product doesn't meet that spec then it will be used for another range, to avoid wastage.
So your value beans/spaghetti/bacon/tomatoes etc are in that range because they might be of a slightly different colour/size/shape/weight etc to the other more expensive ranges on the shelf.
I've certainly got no worries about buying from the value ranges in fact I'd choose value over branded names everytime, why line the big companies pockets any more?

I've looked at value bacon in Tesco, and its very fatty so I would think M & S wouldnt want that because of the quality of it, not just the size factor.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

My husband is really funny about own brand stuff, like his Heinz Tomato sauce. Next time he runs out I'm going to refill his empty bottle with Aldi's and see if he can taste the difference!!! ;D
Lol ;D Let us know if he can taste the difference!Wins since 2009 = £17,600MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS0 -

A lot of it is psychology. We expect M&S to be posh (overpriced!!!???) and we expect value ranges to be poorer quality. Its just not the case. I got 5 joints of meat once for £5, they were M&S rejects from a local butchers that sells such things.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

My husband has a thing for Hellmans light mayo. I tried substituting Tesco Value Mayo in the jar & he noticed but he hasn't noticed it's now Tesco own brand low fat mayo which is still a lot cheaper than Hellmans ;D Just hope I don't break the original Hellmans jar or anything!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

The things we do to swindle persuade our families into cheaper eating habits! I used to buy multipacks of various things for economy but only put them in the fridge one at a time to stop the munchkins pigging out on the lot. Worked for about five minutes till they discovered the secret food stash!0 -
Going back to value products, I bought a box of Tesco Value washing powder in December (£1.65) and it is awful. My whites are now not as white as they were, and a lot of the washing has ended up with large blue spots all over it. I'm going to use the box up on dark washing, and I wont buy it again.
Will try the Tesco own brand powder next to see how that goes.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -

I do 90% of my washes in a cold water cycle too, but I dont get any blue spots or undisolved powder marks on my clothes after the wash cycle.0 -
How long does your wash cycle run for Sweetcheeks? I have a new machine, most coloureds go on the 29 minute wash and the whites on 44 mins or 59 mins depending on how dirty they are. Maybe the powder doesnt dissolve in mine because the cycle is too short?
I will have to experiment, I really wanted it to work for £1.65!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
