People dont want to flush the toilet on environmental grounds yet they are happy to put a cocktail of other chemicals down there to prevent staining. I think, overall, a quick flush with water after going to the loo has to be the most practical and environmentally friendly option.
I'm afraid you have hit the nail squarely on the head there. So many of the eco-tips that are bandied around as being a sure-fire way to save the planet really don't stand up to much scrutiny.
Harpic down the loo - nice chemicals !
Coke down the loo - cheaper - but just think of all those plastic bottles for the landfill !
Ban plastic carrier bags - this causes people to buy even more plastic (see the Irish Republic !)
Domestic wind turbines - 'nuff said !
Battery powered remote controls to save energy - I use my index finger and the on/off switch, but perhaps I am doing it wrong ?
Apart from which, if I wanted to use a toilet that smelt and looked like a third rate, uncleaned public toilet I would go to a "third rate, uncleaned public toilet" not my bathroom. But again, perhaps I am doing this wrong ?0 -

I thought it was a money saving tip for those on a meter!moonrakerz wrote: »Apart from which, if I wanted to use a toilet that smelt and looked like a third rate, uncleaned public toilet I would go to a "third rate, uncleaned public toilet" not my bathroom. There's nothing third rate about my toilet, nor is it uncleaned.
I thought we could have a good discussion about this without someone implying that people who don't flush every time have third rate uncleaned toilets.0 -

I just happen to think that a toilet that has human waste - of any sort left in it - is uncleaned and somewhat disgusting ! Especially when a great deal of engineering expertise has gone into a machine that will self clean at the the touch of a button - or pull of a chain !
Some people find spitting in the street acceptable - I don't.
Some people find putting their feet on train seats acceptable - I don't
everyone has their own standards !0 -
I haven't tried this yet but I wonder whether a Sterodent (false teeth) cleaning tablet would solve the problem. It certainly cleans coffee stains from beakers and cups.0

Might be worth a try but, for me at least, it's not the stains I need to get rid of but the limescale the stains are on.0 -

Get a bottle of 'spirit of salts' from your local plumbers merchants - it will cost about £3.00. Also buy a plastic washing up brush from the supermarket. Tip about half a cup of the spirit of salts into the loo and leave for at least half an hour. vigourously brush with the plactic brush to dislodge the limescale, and DONT SPLASH! (or forget, and use the loo!) Flush a few times and the loo will be sparkling clean.
DO NOT use the plastic brush to wash the dishes with afterwards. Ever.I can spell - but I can't type0 -

and after flushing a few times realise that you may not have saved any water after all!!0 -
Don't take it personally Joe as people like thescouselander and moonrakerz make a valid point, they're entitled to their opinions. I think when it come down to it we all need to find a balance between waist and the environment.
I put some Soda Crystals down my loo last night by the way and managed to only shift half of the lime scale/stains. I've been looking around for a loo brush as well and will try to get one from Ikea as theirs seems the most aesthetic, something I think I’ll definitely need as I think my loo certainly needs a good brush as well.0 -
I am in total agreement with Scouselander and Moonrakerz.
Some of the Money Saving Ideas proposed on here are simply eccentric!
To save my electricity in future, I am thinking of driving to my local library(it is only 6 miles) where I can use their Computers to post on MSE. 3 round trips a day should do the trick.
P.S.
and I can use their toilets as well! - make that 6 round trips!0 -

I pay 57p for 1000 litres of water. Might be cheaper to just flush more regularly!.....0
