I've heard of people using a cheap coke and leaving it in overnight.
Put's you off drinking it
Tesco value sugar free cola is 20 p for 2 litres - I'm not sure if the active ingredient is in this type - perhaps you'll have to spend 44p on 2 litres of ordinary stuff.
Yes, cola contains some powerful dissolving agents. Pouring a can down the loo and leaving it overnight helps keep it clean. So does dropping a denture cleaning tablet and leaving it overnight.
As for cola, apparently if you put a tooth in it, the enamel will dissolve within a few days! When it enters our digestive system however, it is metabolised, so that will not remain as cola in our body for more than an hour or so. Our own stomach digestive acids can dissolve more than teeth - they can dissolve razor blades!!!Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Not if you only use just enough to cover the stains and don't use it too often. I got mine before xmas and have only used a quarter of it so far.0 -
I actually wanted to try/get something that I'd use now and again, especially when I've visitors as it can be quite embarrassing. So I’ll probably only use Harpic Power Plus infrequently anyway!0

I try to be sensibly green, and have done so for many years. I recycle everything I reasonably can, including clothes, books, spectacles, glass, mobiles, ink cartridges, vegetable peelings, card, tins, etc.I turn my heating down and put on a sweater, and ensure my house is adequately insulated.
But I have trouble cutting down on water. With a family of four, the washing machine is on almost every day. I use the dishwasher daily too.
And as for the loo... The thought of not flushing every time either a no. 1 or a no. 2 is deposited in it makes me cringe!
I invite you to try and convert me, but ugh!0 -
I flush the toilet every time it is used. The chemicals needed to clean it when it becomes stained are not good for the environment, so I suspect it's better to flush more tap water and less chemicals in to the environment.
If it ever does become stained or get limescale I pour soda crystals down the loo and leave them overnight. It should all scrub away in the moring leaving a clean toilet. Soda crystals remove the limescale, and this is usually what holds the stains and looks grimy.
The sainsburys cleanhome toilet cleaner (their ecological own brand which claims to be better for the environment) is also very good, and it's currently on sale for 65p a bottle. I find it works just as well as many other brands, even better than some which cost a lot more. It doesn't have any dye either, so you can leave it as long as you want without turing the toilet bowl funky colours.0 -

I won't try to convert you, if you don't want to do it then you are free to not do it.
I don't worry about people not doing the things I think are important, and don't worry because I don't do the things other people think are important.
If it's not illegal and you aren't harassing someone else then you are free to continue doing it.0 -

Thank you for that, I use soda crystals a lot but never thought of putting them in the loo. I'll try it tonight as it needs cleaning.0 -

Took me some time to work this out, but that may be because I've had a glass or two of Friday night medicine.
But, as it doesn't seem that I'm being told off, I shall continue to insist my loo is flushed after any appropriate deposit. Men's wee-wee, especially, is less than fragrant.0 -

I got a free bottle of Harpic Power Plus and that works great.
Vinegar works too, but you have to push the water out of the bowl fist. You can also use kitchen paper or loo paper soaked in vinegar. Do it last thing at night, or when the house is going to be empty during the day to give it maximum time to work.
Does that not sting like mad?
I don't fancy using loo paper soaked in vinegar.
(Sorry it is Friday night and drink has been taken)0 -

I know that is very MSE but I am sure you are not supposed to drink it afterwards
(Apologies again - see previous apology)0
