As soon as I got one of the decent steel ones and realised they keep water hot for 24 hours. My old one with a glass type insert barely kept warm for 6 hours or so. Also they are a lot more robust and I'm not scared of dropping or knocking them over. Our local co-op had them for £5 on special offer a couple of months ago. Might be worth seeing if your area has them ?

I have flasks that stay hot for upto 12 hours or more and are glass and yet they are not made by the most well known company and were Wilkinsons branded.

Another by the most well known company lasts between 6-8 hours and a food flask by the same company(metal)which has to be warmed first soon cools down and I was disappointed.

I found with my flasks that if I put boiling water in it for a good 5-10mins before I wanted to put in my actual food or drink then it would keep hotter for twice as long. Maybe try that and see if it helps?

I have 2 Thermos "Everyday 50" 50cl steel ones. One for tea and coffee, which stains the insides, and one for cold water. With things like this, I try to get the best, but pay the least for them.

I don't think that I'll be throwing them away for a while yet. I bought them in 2007 (ASDA, £7.00 each) and they have a 10 year manufacturer's guarantee, so I scanned the receipts. Most receipts are thermally printed and blur or fade over time.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

We have a couple of wilkinson's flasks and they are very good at keeping drinks hot. A couple of people in our walking group have bought pricey flasks from specialist outdoor equipment shops and have found that they are not nearly as good.

I've just bought myself a small "one mug" sized flask from Wilkos to use on the train when I go to DDs. There's not always a trolley and I get travel sick if I have to queue in the on-board shop.

Thanks for your replies. I've not checked my other three flasks yet. I suppose they will have some frugal use whatever the time they keep liquid hot/warm. However, will keep note of your recommendations in case I need a new flask.

THat's odd, hubby told me the old works work better and the steel ones don't insulate as well...

I would test to compare but I discovered the fragility of our thermos the other day when it toppled off the worktop :( - only had it a week as I got it at the jumble, the one time I did use it though it was really good!
