Did you go look at online retailers such as HMV? Even Tesco.com does it. I'm not talking about small time retailers here, Tim. It does not go into a holding account. The retailer gets authorisation that the money is available and a hold is put on the funds pending release to the retailer upon despatch of the goods.

I get my info from both professional and private experience.

Like you said, a holding account. So the money is actually in the sellers account. This is just done for accounting reasons because it is easier to refund money that hasn't been allocated.

So what is the experience that you gained your info from?

You're wrong...it's not a holding account! The money does not actually leave the buyer's account until requested by the retailer. Instead, the funds simply become unavailable to the buyer to spend elsewhere.

My OH works for Barclays. I work in Retail.

I am aware that you sell beds on Ebay, Tim. I would say that your retailer experience is that of a small-time trader rather than that of a major corporation. As such, your experience of this is different, as the workings are different for small traders.

Just wanna mention that some credit card company will show money as pending transaction and it will clear automatically after 3 days. in between if their fraud team find any suspecious trnxn (like big purchase just aftert address change)then they will call card holder.

You appear to be contradicting yourself.

As jswaminathanuk the money is pending until it clears to allow for security checks, then it clears into the sellers account. This is no different for big or small companies, and it makes no difference to the buyer because as far as they know the money has gone from their account. So for you to suggest that people don't like "small time traders" as you call them is complete rubbish. In my experience people would rather buy from smaller independent retailers because they get a better service.

If you had done your homework properly you would know that ebay is only a very small part of my business.

I said that people didn't like small traders who took the money without having the item in stock to despatch. I suggest you re-read what was written, Tim. It seems you have a big chip on your shoulder, or you are trying to prove something. My OH says you're wrong (and with 20 years experience working in the banking sector, I think my OH has some clue on this). I say you're wrong (and that's with a lot of years experience working in Retail for major players). So, tell us what you base your knowedge on, Tim? Other than selling beds on Ebay, that is...You seem to think I've been researching you. I know you sell beds on Ebay because I've seen you mention it enough times on the Ebay forums on here. Maybe you should stop assuming, eh? You ARE a small retailer, as such, facilities available to larger businesses are not available to you. You also claimed that Marshall Ward's Terms and Conditions are breaking the Law. Show me where they are breaking the Law, Tim? There is no contradiction in my post. The money does not leave the buyer's account. It is held there, but made unavailable to the buyer.

Oh, and where jswaminathanuk's post is concerned, pending does not mean taken. It isn't taken until 3 days later (and that's if the item is in stock and ready for despatch). If the item isn't in stock and ready for despatch, a hold will be put on the funds to stop the purchaser from spending them elsewhere. When the item is in stock and ready for despatch, the money is then requested. Some retailers don't operate like this (as I said previously). They tend to be the small time traders (such as yourself). They take payment even when they don't have the item in stock. For this reason, buyers don't like them. Also, small independent retailers tend to charge more. You're making the mistake of thinking your own personal experience as a small time trader applies to everyone. I can tell you it doesn't.
