Remove the pads, and clean the calipers using a metal brush and a brake cleaner, compress the caliper using a clamp, spread copper grease to the back of the pad (which sits inside the caliper) and also the inside of the caliper. Refit pad to caliper.

Do not get any copper grease on the face of the pad otherwise your friction material won't stop you.

However, if you've got to the stage of removing the pads the above is obvious :)

    not to everyone it seems?

you forgot to mention jacking the car up and using axle stands, tut, tut. ;)

I never mentioned removing the wheel either, lets wait and see how many try and get the pads out with the wheel in place :rotfl:

Sound advice, I am sure. But. Would you mind clarifying EXACTLY what you mean, because I feel quite certain that this advice could easily be mis-understood by an eager beginner who could then create a very dangerous situation.

The front of the pad is the friction surface that contacts the disc.
The back of the pad is the metal plate that the piston pushes on.

I have just been to KF Croydon on Mitcham Road for MOT of my car for £35 online. V good customer service, excellent on timing, just had to pay £4 extra for a replacement bulb! I am well pleased & would recommend to my friends n family... (23/07/10)

Kwik-fit once had my car for a same-day tyre change.
Normally do that myself, had driven in late to work and punctured 2 tyres, so had to.
Promised me it would be ready by 1200. At 1200 promised it would be ready by 1500. At 1500 promised definitely, absolutely, it would be ready at 1700.
At 1700, manager was on desk, and wouldn't talk as he was busy discussing on the phone where he and his girlfriend would have dinner that night.
After listening for a few minutes, accidently set my files on the desk cutting off his phone call. Got my car keys back, went into the garage, and nothing had been changed.
He was bleating on about a service charge that needed paid as I drove out.

Have never been back. I'm sure some of them are maybe fairly good, but I'll never be near that one again.

Don't you check the easy things like bulbs before going for the MOT? I bet they rake in £100s a year from 'replacing' bulbs. :D
