Asda ripping us off with carrier bags?

I work for M&S and apparently about 30 people have written to Stuart Rose to say they will never shop at M&S again after being charged 5p for a plastic bag, despite at least 2 months pre-publicity and the huge free handout of the stronger "bag for life". I have seen people berating cashiers for the same reason.
I can't believe people who are willing to pay higher M&S prices for food are quibbling over 5p per bag. The company does benefit from the positive publicity but all "profits" from the charge go to an environmental charity. I think 70p per bag is pushing it though, and I am not aware that ADSA make a charitable donation from the proceeds - perhaps I am wrong?AF days in Feb 2010 - 2 :A

Well I think its a good idea to charge Aldi have being doing it for years, and it does make some people think twice about using a new bag.
I do tend to fall short on carriers when I go to Aldi I seem to always get more than what I actually wanted, but I just put large things loose in the trolley and wheel it to the car.
Granted not everyone uses a car for shopping. I dont think its particularly hard thing to reuse bags and use some of the reusable ones you can easily carry on your person0 -
Thats not Asda's fault really is it!
Come to think of it, other brands packaging isn't their fault either!
ACTUALLY I THINK ASDA TESCO AND THE OTHER BIG SUPERMARKETS ARE TO BLAME FOR THE EXCESS PACKAGING, WE'RE ALWAYS BEING TOLD HOW MUCH CLOUT THEY HAVE WITH PRICE FIXING AND PLANNING ETC WHY CAN'T THEY VOTE WITH THEIR FEET AND BRAND WOULD COMPLY, SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT FAR MORE THAN BANNING PLASTIC BAGS ( WHICH INCIDENTLY COST THEM MONEY !!!!)Busy mum of 3, so if my posts don't make sense or ask a silly question be patient:rotfl:0 -

I recommned this: http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/%212156
I have a string bag from Lakeland in my handbag. It's very useful as it rolls up to nothing and you can fit a load of stuff in it. (The bag was free as I got a Lakeland voucher for informing them something didn't work on their website.)
Even before the environmental changes came in I was getting to the point where I couldn't cope with the amount of plastic bags I had in my house, so I went and got reusable ones from Sainsbury's.
I went to Ikea this week and enjoyed putting my stuff in my string bag or carrying in my hand while 9 out of 10 other people where buying Ikea reusable bags which they won't reuse.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I don't get what the big deal is about plastic bags. In France, most supermarkets just don't have them at all, and if you ask for one, they look at you like you're asking them to give you your shopping for free or something!
If no supermarket issued them, then everyone would just carry round reusable material bags, and it wouldn't be an issue in the first place. It's really not that hard to shove a couple in the boot of your car, or a small one folded up in your handbag.
British people whinge over the most pointless things sometimes!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

I agree with you regarding the packaging. I really hate everything in plastic bags like potatoes and veg etc. For one thing, it makes the contents sweat and helps them to go mouldy quickly. I'd rather they used recycled brown paper bags - especially for mushrooms. I think we are all grown up enough to put how much we want in a bag ourselves.Genie
