We've had incredible prices for so long, it had to change. Savings interest rates are down, mortgage rates are up, house prices are plummeting. Food prices follow the trend, and don't forget those greedy shareholders.

I'm not sure what you mean about 'bagging' your freezer stuff. You mean you discard the cardboard packaging? But most foodstuffs are then encased in plastic. No need for further wrapping?

I think you'll find the cashier was agreeing just because it's easier. I worked in retail for 13 years, I can pretty much guarantee that was the case.

But why was your OH so wrong? Why did he have ideas in his head it's some marketing con and speak it as if he was right?

    It's here

"On the environment, Mr Darling ordered stores to ban single-use carrier bags by next year or face legislation"

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7290372.stm

That was it, ban them or face legislation. I knew it was something which meant they had to try and stop people from using them.

That's why I'm asking what the prices for a green bag are in different areas because the nice cashier said they were 70p.

bagging freezer stuff- Chicken kievs for example come in a cardboard box with no plastic packing inside so I put them in a bag. Sometimes things come in a tray plastic tray with cardboard around I remove the tray and wrap etc.

Seeing as the cashier was moaning aswell I don't think she had a problem with him. We are not nasty to people they do a very hard job especially dealing with people day in and day out.

Maybe he hadn't heard of the legislation. Hadn't listened to the news for a while. So he felt a bit cross. It happens.

But if your moaning about costs of living etc wouldn't you have paid attention to the budget?

And that doesn't explain why he assumed he knew what he was talking about when he didn't.

Moaning about it being a marketing con today and not about the enviroment as it should be. If this change had been done on the 1st June like they said, it wouldn't have been a shock for the customers or the staff.

I'm sorry the way I have typed it has upset you but I was trying to write a shorter piece rather than type the whole conversation I tried to use bullet points.

I use the Wilkinsons green bags, I have had them for about 18 months now and hardly worn at all, I think they were about 50p each at the times. I just leave them in the car when we do weekly shop

I also carry some small reusable bags when we go out just in case, rarely use any other bags, apart from odd time

I wouldn't use old carrier bags for that, buy some frezzer bags, you can get them for silly money.

Carrier bags will have had stuff in them, that stuff will be in packets & boxes that has been handled by everyone & stacked on floors, ect.

Get some "virgin" bags for that.

    That doesn't make sense.

Are you saying you think it's a marketing con when it clearly isn't then? Why do people treat their own cynicism they've created in their head as fact?

Got to say that the charging for bags should not come as a shock to anybody ... the government ahs made announcements about it as have all the supermarkets and it has been widely commented on in the media.

My little foible is to make sure I am using a competitiors bags when I shop .. in ASDA I will reuse Tesco branded bags, in Tescos it is M&S bags, in Sainsbury's I use the ASDA bags etc. etc. The fun is that Tescos actually give me 'green points' for it as well ;) (although I don;t think this is enough to allow me to give up the day job just yet)
